Hi all
My two budgies recently started to breed, so I gave them their own cage and nesting box, starting changing their food multiple times a day and added more veggies for them to eat. My hen laid her first egg 5 days ago, and laid her second one yesterday. The first one broke the very night she laid it, I wasn't too concerned, I had read that sometimes accidents happen and maybe the hen needed a bit more nutrition. But, today when I went to check on the box I saw the bits of the second egg scatters around the box. When I looked carefully, there was some bedding stuck on my hen's foot with a little bit of the egg yolk on it. I'm a bit scared to what might be happening, is she breaking her eggs on purpose or maybe she doesn't know what to do with them? This is their first time having eggs, and bot birds are 2 years old, does it have anything to do with that? It might be because of not enough nutrition so I put a lot more veggies in there, hoping that maybe she would have enough nutrition so as to not break the third egg but I don't really know what else to do. Any ideas on what might be happening and how to solve this problem?

This is not uncommon. Sometimes it's inexperience or calcium deficiency. Unfortunately, for many hens, it's ingrained behavior and most breeders just remove the hen from the breeding program. Some have had success placing dummy eggs in the nest to break the behavior.

I had this with my girls first clutch, she kept breaking the eggs. I placed dummy eggs in and it seemed to stop her from breaking the eggs, and go on to mother two successful baby’s. However second clutch I’m currently going through issues, she did crack on of the 5 eggs but is now seeming to reject babies. With only taking care of one

Thanks for all your replies, my hen has laid 3 more eggs and 2 of them are safely being sat on. The third one was thrown out of the nesting box and broke, but at least she is not breaking them anymore
