I am going to be extending my feathered family and sadly the breeder I’ve used before has had to give up due to poor health. However, bizarrely, I have contacted a breeder literally about a mile away. It felt like a sign as there are very few budgies advertised in this area of the country right now, so to find one on my doorstep was a real surprise. The breeder has 4 month old babies and once my Hamberley is set up and ready, I’ll go and take a look at his birds. Apart from looking for a pinky/lilac tinge to the cere to pick out males, is there anything else I should look for to determine I pick males? It wouldn’t be the end of the world if one turned out female but if possible, I’d like a few male buds to join our mad family. I hope that at four months I should have a reasonable chance to identify the genders.

I am still learning but I have found this website useful. www.alittlebudgietoldme.com/2016/03/3-boy-or-girl.htmlThe standard green or blue I can usually guess fairly accurately, the other color mutations I'm not good at guessing. Pictures are also tricky. Great that you've got a breeder so close! Happy budgie selection and we expect pictures!!!

Thanks tweetiepiesmom. That website looks really good. I’ve got to wait for everything to be delivered and set up yet but once I have new additions, there will of course be photos...if only to see how many think I got the genders right! 😆

Great - I love the "guess the gender" game!

Visit and take a few photos, if the breeder is okay with that, and then post them up here. At least then you will get some extra opinions; as one of my old teachers used to say, “two heads are better than one, even if they’re goats’ heads.”

I will visit HezzHe’s sent me one photo but it’s too grainy to make much out and the cere of one is visible but too grainy to see it clearly enough. I’m waiting for more photos.

The grey or blue (hard to tell) looking yellow faced bird looks like a hen, it's the only one I can make out.

I thought so too. I’m still waiting for further photographs but will try to get along to see them myself one early evening or at the weekend and see if I can get some better photos. I specifically asked for photos with the ceres too. Hopefully he’ll take more this evening before it gets dark.

I like that one also skysmumI’m going to see them on Saturday to try and get some better photos. I also have two males reserved with a different breeder who is able to sex his chicks well. One is a blue with a white face and the other blue with a yellow face and they’re gorgeous. Not ready until next Thursday to be collected though. So I’m keeping everything crossed I find some males on Saturday too.
