I was weighing my budgie today and he is 51 grams but i wasn't sure if that was a healthy weight. so i fell down a rabbit hole of trying to work out if it was. Arthur could be a normal weight if he is a English budgie but i'm not sure if he is. if hes a regular/ traditional budgie hes overweight according to the research i've done. hes 7-8 inches long from the top of his head to the end of his tail (hes scared of rulers so i cant measure exactly) does mutation have an impact on their weight? im not sure of his mutation either so if someone can tell what he is that would be cool! ive included some images below. Any help is much appreciated, Arthur & Kat <3

Arthur is a very handsome young man!
He looks to me to be quite a big bird so I'd say 50g sounds ok. I can imagine the difficulty of measuring the length of a budgie with a ruler! The only real way to tell is to hold him and feel for his keel bone. If the keel bone feels very sharp he is underweight, if it is not at all prominent then he is overweight.
My buds are around the 50g mark. They are from a breeder that breeds show birds so they do tend to be bigger.
Once you have an idea on his current body condition regularly weighing him can be a useful way to keep track of if he is gaining or loosing weight at all.
Not sure if that is helpful. Someone else might be able to give you a better idea based on length and his pictures.

He does look to be the bigger ‘English’ type. Does he fly around, get exercise?

I did it to my bud and he definitely gave me a look of what the heck do you think you are doing followed by a sharp peck 😂
It was all over pretty quick and he then proceeded to jump straight back on my hand again and tell me what for. Provided he is tame I'm sure you will be forgiven. Especially if you can provide a small millet type treat afterwards. (Small mind you because we don't want him getting fat!)

He does look to have a bit of the exhibition budgie gene, but he does also look to be overweight, perhaps that’s just his feathering. If you can’t feel his keel, he and you are in trouble.

Regarding mutation, what color are his cheek patches? I can't tell from the photos. And are his tail feathers grey and black?
