When we moved into our current house 23 years ago it was a restoration project. Almost untouched since it was built in 1936 it was an aladdin's cave of history. In the bedrooms under several carpets and finally some lino we found old newspapers from 1939. Downstairs had had more recent flooring obviously done in 1961. I kept some of the better pages out of interest and today as i was clearing out some draws came across them again and thought, it's no good they have to go but before they did i looked through some again. This article was in one from 1961 I knew he had a budgie called Toby who he was very fond of but didn't know he was gifted another one after Toby passed away

Sounds like a mammoth task skysmum. Are you at the stage where you can sit back and relax and admire all your hard work?

Didn't Queen Elizabeth have a budgie aviary when she was young? I wonder if she still keeps budgies.

I thought I had replied, I think budgies were very popular back then, although how loads lived quite long, not sure. in our house alone, my parents both smoked.
if you have all that.. have you gone under the floorboards, you never know, something valuable might be down there. people back then I think used to hide all sorts

jellybean , the first couple of years was the hardest with new roof, windows, doors, central heating, new kitchen but the rest was just decorating which i took my time with. Can we sit back and relax now? probably not, OH has just retired, can't have him sitting about @yellowfacedviolat , me too, the 1939 ones were more interesting, many references to the lead up to WW2, i have kept a couple of those in better condition for the grandchildren. tweetiepiesmom , the queen still keeps Liberty Budgies, she has enjoyed watching them all during lockdown apparently, she has over 100 and they are free flying and return to the aviary themselves ffiscool , ahhhh floorboards, some came up for various jobs but there is room for improvement, i will add it to my list In my dining room the two little boys that lived here back in the 30's had drawn pictures on the walls before they had papered, i found those while stripping the room. The house had had just one owner before us, the ladys name was May and she brought her boys up alone as she lost her hubby in the war, her bike was still in the shed and she was in her 90's when she died.

I had to google "Liberty budgie". Google didn't have a lot but did have some pictures of the Queen's aviary and couple pictures of a budgie (very pretty blue and white). There also was an article from 2000 saying they were looking for some females as breeders. It said there were over 100 budgies in her aviary. Must be fascinating to watch them!
