We’ve just had our first night fright. First time for everyone as previous buds have never suffered. Luckily our bedroom is directly above the Hamberley and so I soon guessed what it was and dashed down to them. All are now safely perched and off the sides of the cage. Can anyone recommend a decent night light that either has a fairly long cord if it’s mains operated or is rechargeable and doesn’t need to be plugged in so I can sit it next to the cage at night for them. Currently I cover with an old king size duvet cover which I cut in half but leave a gap. This clearly isn’t enough however and I don’t want repeats as it’s scary for all, including Jasper who wondered what on earth was happening. Poor little buds are all looking sleepy and settled now so I hope we won’t get another tonight.

Ooh, thanks @samwiseg. I’ve got a whole bag of them in the roof from when I used to have an extra light source on my old tortoise tables, but since we moved and built new ones they weren’t needed. Wouldn’t the bulb need to be quite dim though? What bulb do you use with them?

No don't need to have a dim bulb really What we tend to do is have the light above the cage and when the night fright happens just uncover the front of the cage so they are not in direct light. In my experience it's s a better way of letting their eyes adjust

I’ve been leaving one side uncovered at night, leaving the door open a little and the hall light on and so far we haven’t had a recurrence. Hopefully it was a one-off.

It’s sat in my basket. Think it’s a reasonable price and has good reviews so it’s better than leaving the door open a little with the hall light on. I don’t know why but I feel a little reluctant to just have a bulb plugged into the mains, for fear of an electrical fire. I used the little ones Sam suggested on my tortoise tables during winter nights and on a timer back in my old home as they were in a large room, then I switched to ceramic heat emitters on a thermostat, but having a bare bulb on all night makes me a bit wary. I don’t know why as it’s no different to appliances being on all night.

I haven’t got a socket above floor height they would see and I wasn’t sure just how much light emits from one. My youngest has a nightlight plugged in but the light is very dim. I’m not certain if it’d be enough for the buds to see fully within their cage that there’s no danger. Thanks for the suggestion though bud9. When we moved here we were astonished how few sockets there were and hubby has put in lots since throughout the house but didn’t worry about the dining room. So there’s just two sockets and they’re the other side of the dining table to the cage.

It does sound that a battery operated or rechargeable light would work best for you.

Will do. Hopefully, no more night frights, but at least they’ll have a little light regardless.
