Hi. I am new to this forum. I bought a budgie for my daughter a week ago. Today when my wife was petting the budgie, she noticed dome kind of bug between budgie's feathers. The bugs are alomst 2mm long and 0.5 mm wide. We have a microscope in house and I catch one of the bugs and examine it. I upload a video of it in youtube. Here is the link to the video:
Can someone please tell me what is this and how can I get rid of it? The vet gave me anti-parasite spot on. But he said we might need to get xeno. Thanks in advance.

I donβt know for sure what your bug is - it is an insect, rather than a mite, I think - I could only see six legs. Iβm inclined to think it is a louse (lice, plural). How heavy is the infestation, and what are the active ingredients of the spot-on you were given? Lice can be treated with pyrethrums but mites will need Ivermectin (0.1%)

They gave me Beaphar Anti-Parasite Spot On for small birds which contain ivermectin. Do you think it is effective? And when can we see the result? I applied the treatment around 12 hour ago. Thanks.

Hi, I was unsure myself so did a quick google and pics would seem to show Hezz is right. Checked out reviews of the treatment you used and they are good and a few mentioned working very well on lice so hope works for you.

I checked the cage this morning and found dead lices. However, my bird is not happy as she was. This morning she sat strangely on her branch and it was like she was going to fall down. However, she is not like this morning now and make sounds. She does not scratch herself as yesterday. She is closing her eyes but does not go to sleeping position (turn her head and put it on her back). I was wondering can looking down and sick be a side effect of the treatment? Many thanks.

Is it possible to post a video/photo of your bird? Can you contact the person that you got the budgie from and ask if they had any problems such as mites/insects with them? Hezz ron, would this insect harm the budgie?

Short answer is yes marianne. Some suck blood so trying to identify the type and hopefully will come back with a more complete answer shortly. Had a bit more of a read up and mostly these lice/mites just bite causing irritation, restlessness, scratching etc and should clear up ok without any further issues. Its rarely the blood sucking ones but they can cause anemia.

Thank you all for your comments. Here is a video of my budgie.
I googeled and found out that the bug is bird lice. I do not know exactly the name as different length has different name. I bought the budgie from a pet shop and they are not open on weekends. She is is not tame as I bought her a week ago. But already my daughter loves her. I am open to any advice as we quite like her and want to keep her alive and healthy. Thanks.

Hi hesam, not really sure whether her behavior would be down to the treatment or still be symptoms from the lice. Havent used that specific treatment but certainly had birds react when using treatments in the past, while others breeders I've spoken to havent had those reactions so a lot may depend on the overall condition and health of the bird.

Poor little budgie. You may need to keep treating for the entire life cycle of the lice which my google search says could be about 3 weeks if the lice have laid eggs. I hope there is another pet store near you where you can get supplies for your new budgie. I'm not sure that you can trust buying stuff at a store that has birds infested like that.
Good luck - I can see why your daughter fell in love with her. She's adorable!

Sorry just looked at your video she does look a bit distressed there, my eyes not the greatest these days and on my phone but am i seeing signs of a moult? maybe someone with better eyes could confirm or correct that .

And I won't go to that pet shop again. This budgie is our first pet bird and we do not have any experience. She was so nice and allowed me to pet her on first day. I hope she get better soon. π£π£π£π£

Thank you for reply. As we just have her about a week, my knowledge is so low about her behaviour. I googled moulting and from what I saw during this week I can say she has signs of moulting. But she was active yesterday and from the treatment onward, she is not active. I just found out she is crouching on her stand (it was one of moulting signs as well). But it can show the sickness as well. By any chance do you how long after treatment the budgie should gos back to her normal behaviours? Thanks.
