Yeah, even if you fill them and have multiple birds using one pot they can still only reach so much of the food.
I'll see if there's any evidence of a decrease in pellets when I get home. It was fine with the chop because I had way more than they needed that needed using up anyway. Don't worry, they have had some food this morning and have some chunky veg available. They're not starving.

I have these long ones, the downside is that Iris keeps trying to bash them up and down to knock all the seed out.

I love Iris! She's so funny!
Those are good ones.
I love the hamster bowls I usually use for them. Easy to pop onto a surface outside the cage. Got platforms with dips to sit them in to make sure they don't get knocked to the floor. Can put them on the cage floor if we change the paper in the mornings. It's just frustrating how often the get droppings in or on the bowls. Plus onto the platforms around it, though that's not as bad. So I wanted to try something with a lid. Plus they take up less space than the platforms. At least if I can't find something to bulk the bottom, the pots were cheap. Maybe I should have just gotten the tiny D shaped ones.

How about putting a few rocks in the bottom? I have the stainless steel bowls that sit in a ring hung from the cage bars. When Tweetie Pie was going through his phase of picking up the bowl and flinging it to the bottom of the cage, I added a few rocks and that stopped him. He moved on to something more interesting. Some of the seeds fell in between the rocks but not as bad as you might think. I had to play with rock sizes until I got a collection I was happy with.

That might work, and they'd be easily washable too. Thanks tweetiepiesmom!

I can conclude that they either couldn't reach the pellets or couldn't figure out how to use the pots, or else didn't like them. They are now tucking into brown rice, sweet potato, scrambled egg, and sweetcorn with much gusto.

That sounds yummy. I need to experiment more.

Experimenting is fun.
I bet once Max starts he'll love it. You said he likes shredding so maybe he'll consider shredding a leaf or a bit of broccoli to start.
And as you bond more he might want things if you eat them. That was how Munchy started with me.

ffiscool Mine have all copied each other too. It's hard to imagine starting over with a little one who doesn't know anything. So, in regards to food-bowlgate, I put a teaspoon of seed in a bowl to tempt, and Yuki gave it a go. He could reach the bottom but had to get up to his wings into the opening, which looked very uncomfortable. I don't think the steepness and therefore narrowness of the lids helped. I then remembered that I had a bunch of spare dice and managed to fit a layer in the bowl. I feel like too much of the seed fell down the little gaps though. So my housemate has ordered some resin to try filling in a layer at the bottom. We have plenty of spares to practise on anyway. I'll probably just end up sticking to the ceramic bowls and hoping if they soil the bowl whilst I'm away that causes them to get sick. The ceramic ones are pretty anyway. Munchy sat next to OH on the bed, so Yuki got nosy about what was going on and went to sit on the ladder, and then jumped down onto OH's shoulder.

We'll find a solution, even if that's sticking to the aesthetically pleasing bowls. I'd only save a few cm of cage space by switching away from using the platforms anyway.
I managed to catch a couple of Pippin's honks! He was preening and honking so well, but of course stopped by the time I had the camera. You may have to turn the volume up to hear him.

The resin sounds like a good idea, actually! I only use ceramic dishes for food also though. I like the water dishes attached to the cage side but for some reason it just always seemed awkward to put food in them.

Sometimes.
I prefer avoiding plastic where possible, but the stainless steel bowls always seem huge, so I turned to mini human and hamster ceramics.
Yesterday we put layers of baking beans in the bottom of the plastic dishes and put a layer of rigid paper on top, and that kept the seeds at a good height. They managed to pop the lids off of 3 out of 4 of them though.
I've also rearranged the cage so that the platform bowls are around the top, I'll take a photo later when I get home and also check how much of the live basil plant they've nibbled, so we'll see if the positioning makes a difference.

I forget how much darker the iPad camera is, but I took a couple of pictures of the new bowl arrangements. (Please excuse the cage floor, it will be changed before they go in for the night) And here's everyone whilst I was taking photos: The basil was slightly nibbled too.
