I took Dexter to the vets today as he vomited this morning. Something happened in the night as they'd all changed places and Dexter was on the opposite side of the cage to the other two. They have a little basket which contains shredded paper and slices of balsa wood and all of that was tipped out on the floor. I have no idea what happened but it shock them all up. I'm worried that Dexter and Dean Stockwell might have had a fight. Or perhaps Dexter vomited in the night and that frightened everyone. I think the incident happened sometime early this morning as there were lot of Dexter's droppings under the swing he went to bed on. The other two were both chasing Dexter about around the food pots yesterday too. The night before last they'd changed swings in the night too so there is certainly something odd going on. I think Dean Stockwell is trying it on with Dexter as he knows Dexter isn't feeling 100%.
Dexter came flying out of the cage up on to the top of the speaker and he vomited once he got back in the cage and he looked a little sorry for himself so I called the vets and they said I could bring him in. I had to take him in a taxi and the vet saw Dexter in his lunch hour. He thought Dexter seemed quite bright and couldn't find anything externally wrong with him. Dexter escaped from the carrier and had a fly round the consulting room. The vet did a crop swab and found bacteria in Dexter's crop but no yeast so he is having antibiotics for 5 days (sulfatrim). He also gave Dexter a metoclopromide injection (emeprid) to stop him vomiting. While I was waiting for the Taxi home Dexter was breathing really hard and I felt so bad for him.
Dexter was in the carrier for almost 3 hours and he was quite stressed when I go him out. I've tried to leave him quietly since we got back but I'm getting more worried about him. He looks totally exhausted. He siting on a swing with his eyes shut but not turning his head round to sleep. He's keeping out of the way of the other two as they keep wanting to interact with him and they've chased him a little bit too and I've not seen him eat anything. They're all sitting quietly at the moment.
I'm not sure if I should leave them all in the same cage tonight as I'm worried that their sleep might be disturbed again, and Dexter really needs his sleep. It would be easiest to put Dexter in the spare cage but that might stress him more than leaving him in his own cage. I could put the other two in the spare cage but I don't know if they will like that either. I'm worried about them not letting Dexter eat his supper too.
They won't be going to bed for a couple of hours so any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Oh poor Dexter and such a worry for you. It’s probable the vet visit plus injection have just totally exhausted him plus anti biotics can make anyone feel rubbish. If he stays sleepy this evening, he might welcome being on his own, if near enough to hear them, but if it’s as they all go to bed, lights out, he hopefully won’t care and just go to sleep.

Is there any way that you could put Dexter in the spare cage and bring him into your room for the night, so you're not worrying about him all night?

Sounds like a traumatic time for all of you. Really hope that Dexter settles to sleep and nothing happens to worry you further. Get well soon, Dexter.

Thanks ffiscool , Marianne Marlow and ariellaI popped Dexter into the spare cage as he was sitting on the outside of the cage having a bit of peace away from the other too and he hated it. He sat on a swing for a little while and then he had a little bit too eat but after that he kept jumping and flying about the cage trying to get out so I let him out and he flew back on top of the big cage. About 9pm he really seemed to perk up and was holding his own in the cage. He had a fly about from the cage to the curtains and back again a few times and went back into the cage for supper and had a good long feed. Every time I thought about getting them to bed Dexter was at the food pot so I let them stay up a bit later than usual to make sure he had plenty to eat before bed. After that they settled down to bed quite nicely, although RC did chase Dexter off his swing, which is pretty normal. They went to bed on their usual swings tonight, unlike last night when everyone started off sleeping on someone else's swing. I may have figured out what happened to the basket. Dean Stockwell was climbing about around it this evening in a most precarious way trying to get from one swing to another so I wonder if he climbed into it early this morning and tipped it up. It's not really stable enough for even a light budgie like DS to climb into. Dexter tried to climb on it earlier too when he was looking for somewhere away from the other two. So that's my current working theory on the upset basket mystery. So to sum up, Dexter went to bed looking brighter and happier than he did at 5pm when he looked his worse today so hopefully he'll be feeling a bit better still in the morning.

That’s a brighter update and I hope you’ll also sleep a bit better knowing he’s perked up and has eaten. Maybe after a good sleep and having eaten, he’ll feel better and especially once the antibiotics have kicked in. We don’t want any more vomiting episodes, bless him.

Thanks everyone.
I think Dexter slept better last night although he did move to a different swing. He's doing ok this morning but he's still subdued. He's visited the food pots plenty of times so far today. I did find one little cluster of seeds on the floor after I changed the cage paper this morning so he may have vomited again. Yesterday his droppings were just urates and water but they now contain some faeces although it's that very dark green colour they get when they haven't eaten much and there is a bit too much water with them. No one has chased him about today so things seem to have settled down. Dexter's been napping with his head under his wing so that's an improvement on yesterday too. He was a very good boy about having his medicine this morning and he was very easy to catch which on the one hand is good that he didn't get stressed but on the other hand it's a worry if he doesn't have the energy to make a fuss.
I'll keep you updated and thanks for the support and well wishes

I'm glad he slept well and I hope he perks up, eats and his droppings get better.

Thanks Marianne Marlow and ariella Dexter's droppings have firmed up a bit this afternoon and the colour is better. He sat on a perch on the outside of the cage and did a little bit of singing before taking another little nap while he was out there so it's encouraging. It's really nice to hear him sing after 24 hours without a chirp. The vet mentioned again that the infections that my boys are getting is probably linked to their immune systems being compromised by one of the feather loss viruses so this is something we are probably going to have to live with now. Dexter needed antibiotics in May last year too and RC went about a year without an infection. Strangely though, Dean Stockwell who has very obvious feather loss hasn't needed any antibiotics so far. Dexter's feathers haven't been affected at all. RC has trouble growing new tail feathers.

Aww, that must be a worry if the vet has mentioned it again but it gives you the knowledge to be prepared for symptoms presenting themselves and antibiotics being needed. However, Dexter sounds to be improving by the hour and hopefully by the end of the weekend he’ll be back to his usual self.
