Dexter is feeling very much better now. He was very hard to catch for his evening medicine so he's really getting his stregth back. He was singing in the evening too and looking more like his usual self, with the feathers standing up on the top of his head. He took Dean Stockwell's swing at bedtime and refused to give it back to him so I won't be surprised if they change places in the night. All is quiet so far.
I will think very careful about health problems when/if I get any more budgies in the future. I won't risk introducing any more to this little flock as I wouldn't want any others to catch the virus. There were no signs of feather problems during Dean Stockwell's 4 week quarantine. Of course I don't know that he introduced the virus as it sometimes doesn't show up for a few years so Randolph Carter could have been harbouring it and passed it on to DS. If money was no object I could have had DS tested before introducing him but his feathers were all present and correct, I didn't realise that the feather loss viruses, especiall BFD can be passed on to adult birds, and I didn't know about the effects on the immune system either. DS didn't start to lose his feather until a few months after they were introduced.

Dexter is pretty much back to normal today. His droppings are still a bit off but much better than yesterday and he's eating, singing and playing and he was an absolute terror when we tried to catch him this morning

Good news that he was a horror when trying to catch him!
You know he's feeling better.

Yes, that’s really great news and I’m so happy to read this. Antibiotics can affect the digestive system so hopefully his droppings will return to normal when he’s completed the course of medication.

Thanks Marianne Marlow and ariellaIt really did worry me when he was so easy to catch. And him being so quiet was a worry too. So it really is good that he was hard to catch. It's great how quickly can bounce back form an infection. I'm sure I would still be feeling quite sorry for myself if it was me.

I’d have felt worried too, but well done to Dexter for doing so well and responding quickly to his meds. I bet you feel a big weight off your shoulders criswell.

I really do ariella. I'm still keeping a close eye on him and we have 5 more doses of antibiotic to go but it is a relief that he is feeling more like himself.

Thanks for asking, ariella. He had his last dose of antibiotics this morning and he seems back to his usual self. His droppings are good, he's eating and drinking well and singing. Dean Stockwell has stopped chasing Dexter and everything is much calmer now.

I just thought I'd let you know that Dexter has been back to full strength for a couple of weeks now. He's his usual busy self, spending time with Miss Peacock and enjoying twirls on his taxi stick and singing all the time. He's such a cute boy.
