Good morning all, I have just joined, and I have question already, we have both recently retired and have just got a new baby budgie he’s about 10 weeks old, it’s his second day with us, he’s called Boo , he’s a beautiful blue and light grey coloured boy. We’ve had budgies in the past but that was many years ago when I was just a young lad. He’s still getting used to his new environment so he’s a little quiet, he has found the food and water, and already we have had him on our fingers in the cage with no problems, he seems very friendly no biting and will just happily sit there. My question is he seems to have acquired some poo on his back and feathers, is it best just to leave it and allow Boo to clean himself up when he does his normal preening. Thanks and I look forward to any suggestions Regards Tony

If Boo's able to clean it off himself then it's probably best to let him do so rather than handle him at this stage.

He’s getting more settled in now. Starting to chirp more, and is spending more time preening, so I think he’ll get there Cheers Tony

Boo is a beautiful boy, and now I’m going to be the “harbinger of doom”, not to bust your euphoric bubble of budgie ownership, but to give some degree of expectation. You have had little Boo for a couple of days, he is still getting used to his new home, new environment, toys, humans, and the list goes on. At this stage he is not really showing his true colours, and I’m not talking his plumage. . As the days go by, possibly in a week or two, you might find Boo gradually, or suddenly, not being quite so cooperative, not feeding out of your hand, not sitting on your finger quietly, even flying off when you approach. This is all very normal and not due to anything you might have done or not done. It happens in almost all new budgie cases, and if it doesn’t, consider yourself one of the lucky ones! It is simply due to your little guy feeling settled and comfortable enough not to be on edge all the time and asserting his own personality. If/when this happens, you don’t need to change anything you are doing. Continue to interact as normal, possibly even more, bribery is definitely allowed, usually in the form of millet sprays. Most importantly, don’t take it personally. There are quite a few pinned threads in each section that may be of help to you as you mention that it has been some time since you have had a budgie to care for. Any questions you might still have, fell free to drop a line.

Boo is very pretty indeed and love his color 💙
I'm particularly biased towards birdies and find all of them very cute.. Whenever they are walking on flat surface, climbing a ladder, eating, yawning 🤩, stretching their wings or even destroying things with all their strength, I run to get my phone to capture the memory 🥰😅 Also, if my hubby sneezes, I send him to sleep early and think it's nothing, he will be alright. If the birdies sneeze once, I'll be alert and look at the weather change, humidity, room temperature, seed husks, cleanliness and so on.. 😅

Thank you all for the comments and advice it’s really helpful. We have had Boo now for 5 days and he seems to be settling in nicely, yes his behaviour has changed a little , he’s quite calm when my hand is in the cage, he will eat millet when held near him, but is reluctant to step up , but I’m sure that will change. Thankfully he’s not a biter, I’m trying different vegetables with him , he seems to ignore them though. Still it’s early days yet.

Today was a good day. Six days with Boo’ He had a few small flights around the room and is navigating well, no accidents. He’s also stepping up and is really happy to just sit on mine and my wife’s fingers
