When I first got into budgies, I have to admit I did really like the idea of having a talker. We soon discovered she was a hen bird so even though it was possible the chances were slim. But she did turn out to be the most endearing bird I've ever had! But would like to stress I would nnever not get a bird because it didn't talk. Long story short, I always said that Nubbs would talk if he had been on his own. Now he is, I've been having close interactions with him and talking sessions...in his own silly way (or should that be mine) I did say somewhere before that I thought I heard him try to say "pretty boy". Encouraged by this we tried to pursue it. But I've come to realise that he hasn't been trying to copy me...he has actually been copying a door squeak in the hall whenever its opened and closed. I know he was never the sharpest tool in the box but my OH found it to be "rather amusing"

The budgie my family had when I was young did talk but only one phrase. When dad brought him home, he told us kid to speak slowly and say "pretty boy". Can you imagine 4 kids all day long every day walking up to the cage and saying "pretty boy" slowly over and over? He learned it but it came out "pretty, pretty booooooooooy"! He also learned the wolf whistle but nothing else.
Enjoy your squeaky door imitator!

I love this! Every time he speaks, I might think someone closed the door 😅
Glad that he managed to carry on and bond with you guys.. 🧡

I think I told this story before but Stuart always makes this noise that sounds like a phone ringing. I'd put it down to just a budgie noise, because my house phone never rings. I was in the pet shop where I bought him, and their phone rang...... Now we know!!!

Maybe Nubbs associates the noise with his favourite people entering the room

I often wonder what makes some budgies talk more that others. Our last budgie lived till he was nine and did talk, but not a great deal. We now have Charlie aged two and he started talking a few weeks after we got him at six weeks old. He talks all day long and amazes me how much he can learn. It usually takes him about a week to learn a new sentence, and he remembers them all. For instance he knows his full name, address and telephone number.....the list of what he can say amazes me. He makes us laugh a lot . He is very tame but a little nipper.....shouting 'ouch' before he nips.........So back to the question.....is it genetics?

Love it, the ouch in advance
I don’t know if genetics or is it that they copy to bond more. Not saying they bond less if not talkers. Bailey had so many phrases, but at that time he was a single bud.
Growing up we had a single hen, nothing.
Then I had a single male and he spoke, but limited in how much he said.
Then Bailey, vast vocabulary. His first ever ‘it’s a grey day today’
Fascinating though, would love to know if, when they are talking, if they know they are. Or are they just doing it

They definitely have some knowledge of what they are saying, for example Charlie sits by the corner where I peg his millet to and shouts 'want millet" ....Also when it gets near to 8-30 at night, he starts shouting.....it’s Charlie’s bedtime, night night sleep tight and make sure the bed bugs don’t bite.... HE won’t stop until we give him a kiss and cover him up 🤣🤣

Aww he’s so funny. I was basing the intellect on Bailey, which is at times lacking. Lucky he’s handsome lol

ffiscool Sounds like Pippin intelligence. Munchy used to learn phrases from me within about 2 days if he was paying attention, but would forget anything not used often and never learnt anything especially long. He would have had no chance with my grandparents' address. I love their association between things and phrases. Munchy would sometimes say 'hello' if you walked into the room. One time he kept calling "Hello!" and "Good morning!" to my nan when he wanted out of the cage, two phrases he learnt off of her. After the 5th time of her walking past the cage he yelled "Come on!" I love when I tell him "No" and he picks it up for a day or two and starts saying it back to me. But possibly my favourite was one time when he said "I love you", to which I replied "I love you too", and he ran along the back of the sofa until he was level with my head and said "Give us a kiss!"

The ..I love you...is a real heartbreaker isn’t it, and I am sure they mean it. Munchy and Bailey sound gorgeous, as do all our buds.❤️❤️

I am trying to teach Barney 'I love you' at the moment. It's strange as he'd been saying only a little and not very clearly, when we introduced Finlay. This last week his speech has got a lot clearer. We used to have just 'good boy' and now we have 'budgie', 'barney' and 'kiss kiss' as well. I'd kind of expected him to stop talking and just speak to Finlay but that's obviously beneath him 🤣
