Greetings Parakeet Pals,
We can use some help and/or reassurance. We had two keets in a flight cage. Both were doing well for years. We fed them their seed, chop and greens ever day which they both ate. Unfortunately we had to euthanize one because of articular gout. The existing bird, "Tootsie" missed her friend, and it showed with nervousness and eating without the same gusto previously exhibited. We purchased her a little friend, who is now in a separate cage next door (sort of a quarantine, not in a strict sense, mainly to watch for any behavior issues or loose stools etc. on the new youngster " Skipper"). That's the background. Here are the concerns. Skipper will eat seed, millet and 21 grain bread toast. Drinks water also. He ate some brown rice mixed with berries the first day, but just picked at it. He won't eat the veg chop, or leafy greens at all. I tried removing the millet, sprinkling the seeds on the chop. I normally would think that Skipper has only been in his new home about a week, give it time. But, he is boisterous in every way, not shy at all. He barely leaves the side of the cage facing Toostie. It's clear he wants to be with her, and I am confident when they are together finally, the older bird will show Skipper how delicious the chop is. Both birds look physically fine. The shop where I purchased Skipper, fed them mixed cut veggies and orange. I duplicated everything except the orange, because I read oranges can be too acidic for their crop. What is the consensus on an occasional orange? Should we be concerned about anything yet? Thanks for reading. We await your reply.
