Hi,
So I think Dove might be lonely. I'm planning on getting another budgie soon but I was wondering if this is a good idea? I was aiming more towards another female but would it be smarter to get a male? She has a big enough cage for when they live together and I have a quarantine cage. I know it depends on the personality on the bird also but do you think a male or a female will get along better with Dove? Any advice welcome! Thank you!

The chances of male birdie getting along with her are more than a female budgie..since females are territorial and could have a dominance fight for everything in the cage.

How much time are you able to spend with her? Does she have plenty of toys to keep her engaged? When you are away, do you leave a radio on to keep her company? Those are all things that help her not be lonely? How long have you had her? She may still be adjusting to being an only bird. Many, many people have just one budgie and they do fine. As mona said, chances are much better that she will get along better with a male than anther female.

Getting another bird is a good idea if that is what you want to happen, and it sounds like it is. . Definitely look to getting a male as two hens can, more often than not, not get along together and often cannot share a cage in the long term. If you do decide to get her a friend, there are a few things to do beforehand to make the meeting and eventual living together go more smoothly. First thing is to move Dove to the smaller cage and the new budgie has the larger (to be permanent) cage during quarantine. This means that Newbie isn’t moving into her cage when the time comes to meet after quarantine, but rather the other way around. Hens are notoriously territorial about sharing their cage whereas the boys are much more laid back over sharing.

Ok so I think I'm going to get her a friend. She does have toys and I do spend time with her but I want to make sure that she isn't lonely. If I get a male will they mate? I was under the impression that it was better to have a same gender pair. Is there anything I can do to reduce the risk of eggs? If they do lay eggs what do I do? Thank you so much for the advice.

Whether they mate will be all up to your hen. Most likely she will not be interested and the two can live happily together. Opposite genders live in harmony all the time without feeling the need to breed if you don’t supply them with anything that can be construed as a nesting site. There are many other things that can be put in place as well, but cross that bridge if you ever need to. The most important thing is no nesting site.
