This is a question from a friend:
He has lost 2 chicks already. The parents had stopped feeding the youngest and even with hand feeding he couldn't save the baby.
Question: "As you know, my parrotlets have 4 chicks. The youngest one is only 2 weeks and 6 days old today. Parents should take care of them until they are at least a few months old. Yesterday I saw that the parents were mating, and it happened again today. Chicks are still in the nest, and I'm worried that they will be kicked out, if the mother is planning another clutch already. Is there anything I should - or even could - do?"
As far as I have read over here, the parents have to be separated when trying for 2nd clutch and an eye has to be kept on mum & babies - so that they are fed and unharmed. I think it should apply to parrotlets too.. Please let me know, if there's something else to add. Thanks in advance!! 🧡

I would suggest the same, mona - remove the father and hope the mother’s natural motherly instincts kick back in to feed the chicks she has. Your friend needs to be ready with the appropriate feeding formula and be prepared to step in and either help mum out or to take over completely if mum abandons her chicks. Since they aren’t newly hatched, I would surmise that this shouldn’t be the hard and laborious task that feeding chicks in the first few days of life. If mum isn’t feeding them at all, then I would suggest swapping parents and seeing if dad will step up to the plate. I know nothing about parrotlets, so am applying normal small-parrot-behaviour thinking to this situation. Please wish your friend well, and I would very much like to be kept up to date with the chicks’ progress.

Just an update: His baby birdies are doing well so far.. He shared a pic of the babies, while he picked out the babies for cleaning their nest and cage.
