Hi. I recently built an outside aviary for my 2 budgies. It is 12' long x 7' deep and 7' high. We live in southern California and the weather is pretty teppid. It mainly ranges from 55-75 all year long and it doesn't snow; but we do occationally have those random times where we get a few days of 90 degrees or even down in the 30s. Those extremes are not common but they have happened. Should i get a heater? Or would nesting boxes be warm enough? If so, what heaters do you all reccomend for budgies? I do hope to get a few more budgies in the future.

Welcome! I would suggest you get a room heater in case one of your budgies gets sick. You'll want to keep it warm until it is healed. Many, many, many room heaters have PTFE and similar coatings. Check carefully to make sure you buy one that doesn't have those coatings. I have the new Dyson heater/fan which advertises that it doesn't have that coating. Its expensive but I like it. There are also small heaters that you clip inside the cage. www.amazon.com/Pet-Products-9050-Snuggle-Warmer/dp/B07HMLT6SM/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=bird+cage+heater&qid=1623175836&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-4It doesn't get hot - you can touch. If you put it near the top of the cage and cover the cage at night, it will add some heat and keep them comfortable. In an aviary I think I would put it in a sheltered area and the budgies who want a bit more warmth will gravitate to it. I would not put a box or anything that might look like or be used as a nest in with them or you might find the hens laying eggs, unless you are prepared for that. We'd love to be introduced to your budgies!

A small closed-in area may be all that is needed, I certainly wouldn’t recommend using nest boxes as a source of retaining heat - you may retain heat but not of the kind you may be wishing for, if you have a hen. A hen will be encouraged to breed with a nest box or anything else resembling a place to lay in the aviary.
Make sure there is a shaded area in the aviary for the birds to escape the heat, and depending on what you use you will need to monitor it for the first summer to be sure they don’t over-heat.
