Hello! I recently bought a budgie from PetCo (like 3 days ago) and I forgot to ask the employee helping me how old the budgie was and what gender she thought it to be. I’ve done some research online, but it’s still a bit difficult for me to tell, probably because I’m a complete newbie at this. I named it Beau (a unisex name). Beau never really shows me the other side of their face, so I don’t have any shots of that, but Beau is pretty uniform all around. Also, I’m 99% sure that Beau does not have all black eyes. I think I can see some of the sclera. (Edit:) I’ve decided to ask here as well because I don’t see anywhere else I should post this question, and I didn’t want to make another post about the same budgie. Would anyone know how old Beau seems to be? As of today (6/12/21), I’ve had Beau for exactly 1 week and these photos were taken the day after I got him. I know blueelephant said maybe less than 3 months, but I wanna see if there are any other opinions. 😊

Beau is very cute. Can't beat a baby budgie sitting in a pot of seed.
I'd guess beau is young, less than 3 months old. There is a little bit of black on the beak which I think it's a baby bird thing, and the eyes look big and black. I can't see on my phone but if you look very closely can you see tiny black bars on the tips of the feathers at the front of the head? That would indicate the bird has not had it's first moult yet. They can be very subtle marks.
Gender wise I would guess male from the first photo. However I am pretty useless at gender so you might want to wait for some other advice on that one!

I’d definitely agree with male also. Beau is just gorgeous!

You have a beautiful little boy.
Could you please remove the snuggle, your budgie could pick at the fibres on this, and if ingested could be fatal.

Agreed on male and also about the snuggle hut. You have a beautiful little boy. Could you please remove the snuggle, your budgie could pick at the fibres on this, and if ingested could be fatal.

The name Beau certainly suits your beautiful little boy! Since he came from PetCo he's not used to being around people so have patience and go slow with him. Most of all, enjoy your new baby!

I thought it was very cute too, but my only concern was him pooping in his food (which he did do twice!) so I ended up buying him a new, more shallow feeder and replaced his deep dish with nesting material. He doesn't go inside it at all though. I also thought he was young, maybe too young to assess yet, because of his baby bars! But I wasn't quite sure if he was young young or 4-8 months because it seemed like his baby bars weren't all the way to his cere. I'll probably post my age question somewhere more appropriate for it, since this is the gender section. Thank you!

Thank you, everyone, for your input! It seems that male is the winning gender so I will start referring to Beau as "he/him" now. Also, thank you for calling Beau beautiful!

Definitely a boy, nd definitely get rid of the happy hut. Also look at getting him some natural tree branches for perches rather than use the smooth dowels that come with cages. Tree branches of differing thicknesses and textures will help keep his feet healthy and exercised, not to mention his beak.

They’re smaller than the smooth ones and not shown in the picture. I kept the smooth perches because they are also wood and it just seemed like a waste to not use at least 1? Plus, Beau always goes to stand on the top one (although I wonder if that’s just cuz it’s there...).

I thought the same earlier.. but smooth ones aren't good for them.. neither for beak or nails.. i don't use dowel perches at all now.. if I do, as suggested here, wrap it with Jute or sisal or cane wrap to make it uneven.. i dislike throwing away things too..
I'm planning to get thicker uneven rough perches for them.. after having found many bird safe trees in a nearby jungle like area, which is yet to be destroyed to be converted to cement jungle..
Birdies feel safe on the topmost perch.. the higher, the better..

Update: Is Beau still male? I was able to look at him(?) closer today and noticed that he seems to have some white coloring around his nostrils. I’ve seen that people usually say female because of that.
