Ants

so.. i have ants. I have no idea where they are coming from as I am upstairs, even though I have my own front door etc.. there is nothing near the door nor up the stairs. I think they are coming from under a door bar for the kitchen door. i could unscrew it, but i cannot guarantee I would get the carpet at the right tautness, back again. i have put down vinegar, and all sorts. app the strong smells stop them being able to take anything back to their nest.
i don't want to spray as it could stain the carpet which is new and very pale.
I have seen online some insecticide powders, but wanted to ask anyone on here, if they have had them indoors and how did you get rid of them. I pulled out the fridge and nothing there. they are not by the bin, so does seem to be from the door bar. I wonder if i brought some in somehow when bringing in shopping or taking packages in.
a real pain, as really do not want them taking over

Could there be an ants nest under the floor or even the walls? We had ants when we first moved. Hubby put down a powder they walked in and took back to the nest and we didn’t see them again.

I think under the floor is safe, the carpet and done late last year with new underlay, but walls it could be. i now have patches of vinegar lying on the kitchen floor.. just read about baking soda mixed with icing sugar. the icing sugar attracts them and then the baking soda kills them.
also have pepper down, lol.. these are definitely scouting around, and there are no crumbs on the floor, so hopefully with all these things.. but will get some powder too. makes me itch thinking about it lol

That is a pain! They could be coming up a water pipe, crack in a wall, almost anything. When I had ants a few years ago, I sprayed them and the ant trail with window cleaner (Windex is the advertised brand here to do the job). It killed them on contact plus eliminated the pheromones' in the trail that they put down to guide more ants along the path. I had to do it for maybe a week and it stopped them. Having said that, I had tile in the kitchen where they were so I didn't worry about staining. It didn't stain the tile but window cleaner does have a light blue color which may stain a light carpet. Sounds like the powder ariella used did the trick. You might want to also get a good carpet cleaner to clean the trail where they had been.

I could do window cleaner on the kitchen floor. I don’t know where the trail is but I have to assume under the door bar. They don’t seem to be at the other end of the kitchen by the sink and thankfully not on worktops.

Looking forward to hearing how that works. I'm all for natural remedies.

Thank you! I’ve ordered something very similar. My natural attempts were only until my order comes. So now the area is covered in cucumber, vinegar and pepper. I saw one just now, but I’ve been watching tv, so whether more are there, not sure. It’ll be footwear but my bed tonight, not walking round barefoot lol

I hate ants, mosquitoes & cockroaches... It must be a pain.. same for me right now with red ants..and it's so irritating.. they are just roaming around at places where there is no food.. I have been super clean about the birdie cage out of the fear that they might travel there too.. 😖
We have a lot of ants over here too. The only thing that works for us is a professional pest control for ants and cockroaches, that works well for 6 months or so. Whenever it's scheduled, I have to move out of the house for 4 to 5 hours with birdies somewhere else. It's pending for this house, since we moved during covid & wanted to minimize the risk.
I'm scared of ants going inside the ear 😖 Happened once with my mom and aunt - both had to go to the clinic due to the pain.. that always scares me during sleep.. once covid cases are a bit down and breezie a bit well, we need to get it done here too. Will wait with my birdies at a friend's home..

yech.. hate these things and ouch re them in ears.
Well, I saw another before I went to bed, but I was on edge, so did not sleep that well. I could not bear the thought of them literally all over my flat. Not seen any this morning (fingers crossed). I used a whole cucumber and it seems to have helped, plus I had put new vinegar soaked cloths down. I will watch today - I have the ant block things coming today, not sure what time. But I think by the time I go out tonight, if no new, I might have cracked it. I will put down the ant station things anyway in case any new brave 'scouts' come in. still a mystery how they are there, nothing remotely obvious. no mounds. I would like to think it was purely i brought in some on a bag, or there was something on some veg.. makes me feel better if no nest, trying to convince myself lol

Any kind of flour, ant powder, talc will do it. I had them under my kitchen cupboards and it works, they take the powder back to the next. When we replaced the tiled floor this year, we took the kick boards off and it was like a cemetery of dead spiders

ah ok, didn't realise re the flour.. for now the kitchen stinks of vinegar, cucumber, lol.
I haven't found any sign of them coming from anywhere other than the door bar which is odd. but good. I am so good about crumbs etc on the floor, as since I had the new carpet, i am very diligent.
ooh yech.. if they had been spiders, i would have had to move out.
Just so tired today, it is amazing what is in your mind when sleeping. Now I am working 3 days a week, not sure how did I ever do 5! but thank goodness lie in tomorrow :-) unless new friends appear again

new ants.. agh.. obv the cucumber and vinegar was not fresh enough this morning, but the ant stations are here, so just put them down. I tightened one end of the door bar, so that it hopefully restricts them coming out the whole width..
I have also put down flour too
I can spray the window cleaner on them, as kitchen floor has tiles, but need to be careful where it goes onto the carpet in the hall

where the bar is, i realise that one side of the door frame is not level, so there is a gap where the carpet is/finishes and the wall.. TBH they cut the carpet too short there.. already had them back for other things, but cannot face this, it prob needs a tiny bit of stretching. anyway, i had some sealant left over, so put some there, but the gap is still there. I thought it is better to have them come out of the gap, get to the traps and go back.. if i block it, they may appear elsewhere.
wonder if the flat below has any..
