Oh not nice.. the one that smells like that I think is the tonic seed. I might be wrong but think that’s as an extra at time seed, not daily food seed. Others use it, so they’ll know better.

Yes, the tonic smells like that (I’ve given him that twice - not surprisingly he went for the groats 1st!)) but the Tip Top also smells like it too.

That is odd. We switched from Bravo to tip top with no bother at all. I hadn't even noticed that it smells like licorice, I know the tonic seed does. Update on the switching to Haith’s experiment: Well, Brodie switched over to Haith’s with no bother however….. as the days passed, his poos changed, getting darker & bigger. It got to the point he was really struggling to pass anything then, with some explosiveness (plus sounds effects) all the wriggling & squiggling would produce a huge sludgy mess - easily equivalent to 4 or 5 normal poos - followed by some chirps of relief. 😳 We tried him back on his usual seed yesterday & while not quite normal, his poos were much more like usual. He also ate a lot more of it. Has anyone else’s bud experienced this with Haith’s? Given that it smells like liquorice / aniseed & that can affect humans maybe it’s that? Or maybe we did it too quickly? He was starting to lose weight on it & I would like to get him back on it but not if it upsets his innards.

This is what my tip top looks like, I took a photo when I opened a new sack a couple of days ago. I am wondering if the lack of oats is what constipated him, I think they help to pass number 2's.

The only thing I’d say about liquorice and me, it alters my habits. Mind you not hard as my stomach can be sensitive. Same with garlic

Hezz, do you think if a budgie is used to eating a lot of oats and then eats a mix without so many that it could cause constipation?

It’s day 4 on his old mix and his poos are still a bit weird (but better than they were) - large & dark. I’m confused! It’s a bit hard to tell size wise but pic 1 was from Friday, & pic 2, today

I certainly don’t remember anything happening with mine when I started to reduce their oats content. It is a long time since my guys have had any … all they get now is what they manage to steal from Loki’s.

Brodie’s now been back on his old seed for almost exactly 2 weeks. While his poos did initially improve they never quite got back to normal & now they’re getting worse again - dark, sludgy, massive amounts in 1 go & lots of straining etc. So I’m thinking that while the new seed undoubtedly did not help, that it isn’t the cause? Maybe everything in his body is just slowing down? I don’t want him to go to the vet as I think it’s be too stressful for him in his current state. He’s still eating lots (& weighs 65g!) & isn’t in any distress. He’s v v quiet but is still interested in his bells & coming to sit with me / visit his toys etc & doing his feathers etc.

It doesn't sound like the seed is the cause.
I didn't want to say it cos I don't want to worry you but I hope he doesn't have any kind of lump that's stopping him from pooping properly.

I have wondered that. 😕 The other day when he was straining & I was looking, I did wonder if I saw a lump thing pop out then pop in again but it was so quick & I didn’t have my glasses on so I wasn’t at all sure what I saw. It doesn’t seem to be upsetting him although he is so quiet. Another possibility I’ve just thought of is, years & years ago he was diagnosed with Megabacteria/ AGY. In the early years he had occasional flare ups, generally around a period of stress such as during a moult. We’ve not had a flare for so long, but his body is obviously under a lot of stress just now so maybe it’s that? I have taken some videos of his body working hard (& now he’s panting a little too) but I couldn’t work out how to post them! Given his failing health do you think it’s best just leaving him be for now?

Do budgies get piles or similar if it popped out and in?
To upload a video on here, you’d need to put it on YouTube or another like that first
It’s hard isn’t it, if he’s still eating and playing, albeit he’s more quiet, maybe you just watch and see how it goes
