Just make sure mom is feeding it, and when the others arrive that the smallest are also being fed. The biggest ones will be stronger and louder so sometimes the littlest get ignored. Check the crop of the baby to be sure it is full every few hours. It’s a balance of trying not to disturb mom while also keeping as close an eye on everyone at the same time for anything off. It might be wise to buy some hand feeding formula just to have on hand. You can feed using a regular spoon and let the baby eat on its own as long as it has a good feeding response. It’s much less likely to aspirate the chick this way. Syringe feeding takes a bit of practice and should be shown in person if at all possible. You don’t need to hand feed at all though as long as mom is doing her job. But handling the chicks from as early an age as you feel comfortable with will help them be more tame as they grow up.

I have some formula spare, but I think Mum is feeding it well enough. She's a little protective of it currently, and pushing it under her if we come too near so difficult to check the crop, but it's very lively. I suggested to my son that handling would be best left until the last chick has hatched. Should he give any extra/different food to the parents. They have standard seed in quantity, some egg food (they tend to eat all the black bits out and leave the rest) and spinach leaves once a day. Is giving millet a good idea or not? My son thinks they need a treat.

Offer as many variety of veggies as you can. Spinach is really good though! Maybe try carrot grated fine, finely sliced or diced bell pepper a, piece of broccoli, etc. Parents seem to be willing to try a wider variety of foods when feeding chicks, as if they know they can’t eat only what they like - they have chicks to feed too!

Mum seems very sleepy (just like having a newborn) and I can't see how well it's being fed as she doesn't let it out from under her. I'm hoping she knows what to do.

Mum seems very sleepy (just like having a newborn) and I can't see how well it's being fed as she doesn't let it out from under her. I'm hoping she knows what to do. Tiny baby budgies can become chilled rather easily because they aren’t born with down, so it is normal that she doesn’t want to move off him - and she is still incubating the other eggs. If you can catch her when she gets off on her own to get a drink of water and poop outside the box, usually first thing in the morning, often also in the evening, that is the best time to try and get a look at the little ones. Some moms get off the nest any time the box is opened though, which makes it easier to check more often. All sounds normal so far though.

How exciting! Noisy but hopefully a happy noise for your son. Good luck for all the babies and parents too.

Hang a sprig of millet in the nest box for her to top up on between regular feeds, and without the need to come out of the box. If you do need to supplement feeds, rather than a normal teaspoon you can get a feeding spoon which makes things easier for everyone involved. It’s like a normal teaspoon but with the sides rolled in.

I think there's a pretty full crop there. We also caught dad feeding baby, so happy it's being fed. My son put a sprig of millet in the nest box, but one of them has dragged it to the back, so if she feels like a bedtime snack she'll have to get off the eggs! I've ordered a feeding spoon, but doesn't look like we'll need it.

A second baby appeared about half an hour ago. Little bit surprised as the first only hatched yesterday. I've got a lovely video of them both feeding the first one, but they didn't seem to be feeding the younger one at all. That might be that it doesn't need it when it's just hatched though. Mum's eaten all the millet, so I've got another bit to give her tomorrow. They seem to both have have suddenly gone off the spinach. I've actually had to take some down that they've hardly touched, for the first time ever. They're eating egg food by preference, followed by the normal seeds. Edited to say I tried to get a photo but didn't managed before Mum sat on them again. I can't work out how to upload the video.

You need to have something like a YouTube account to upload to. Once you have, click the share or whatever it is that gives you the url link
Then in here you need to be in desktop mode, so if you’re using a mobile, scroll to the bottom and click desktop
When I’m your message - to the right is a toolbar and one looks like the movie clipboard icon. When you click a dialogue box will come up for you to paste in the shared url link
I think it says ok bottom right. And make sure once back in your main message you either click on create reply or create something. If you don’t see that, bottom left is reply and that will work too.

I haven't got a youtube account so I can't upload it. I'll just say that their favoured method of feeding it, is for it to be on its back on the floor. It looks like they're about to do a nappy change. 🤣

Sounds like all is going well, and hopefully you won’t be needing to use the spoon. It’s good to have on hand anyway and can be used for adults if you get a sick one that is not eating.
