I have tried phoning a couple of avian vets and explaining my situation but they are unwilling to help unless I take Charlie into the surgery. As I have said , we don’t have an avian vet in the town where I live , plus I would be afraid the stress to Charlie could make things worse for him. He definitely isn’t moving around his cage, but I think he would come out if I opened the door…..I just don’t know what to do for the best.

I think you can only keep an eye on it for now. It is an awful worry when something is not right. I wonder too, if a vet nearby could still take a look. As it is a foot rather than an internal issue (well, assuming not), then they might be able to spot something, check for a sprain, break, something obvious etc.

If it was me I'd let him rest and try to keep him calm for the day. Let him conserve his energy resting and eating millet, whether that's in his cage or if he prefers sat in your arms, whatever works for him.
See how he is tomorrow, if there is any improvement or not. Then you can make a decision whether to take him to a vet. I have have avian vet who is an hour away from me and I go there for emergencies as a 2 hr drive for a budgie is stressful, but if their life depends on it I do it.
I also have a 'regular' vet my dogs go to who is 5 mins away, they have seen some of my budgies before and although they don't have as much avian knowledge as my avian vet at least they have some knowledge to be able to try to help.
I've had a budgie who has pulled their foot on a swing and after monitoring for a few days they were back to normal. I've George who has a tumour and he has recently lost the use of his left foot, although the leg is still okay. He is managing and isn't in pain. If something was broken you'd know, one of mine had a broken toe and ended up with a makeshift pot/stent on it the avian vet made. She was in agony beforehand and you could see it.
I feel for you. It is stressful but make a plan so you have something to follow whether it is wait and see, going to a local vet or traveling to the nearest avian vet.

Thank you everyone. He hasn’t really moved from his favourite perch today so I have put him some water and seed up there. I just hope he improves and doesn’t get worse as the weekend is looming. My local vet says they have one vet who knows more about birds, so if he doesn’t start to get better in a couple of days, I will have to try and get him there. As I have said I am disabled, plus putting Charlie into a travel cage would worry me in case the stress killed him and then I would have to live with that too…. Wish I was one of the people who didn’t worry so much .

What I can say from my experience is to get him to a vet in a very small travel cage with a perch at the bottom to perch on and nothing that could hurt him - maybe base as a small pillow and towels around the wall.
Breezie had similar issues in the beginning and as everyone said, it could be anything. I couldn't take him to vet when it happened, since we were down with Covid. When we got it, it was very late for it to heal back to normal. He has become more of a touch me not bird for the fear of pinching his nerves anywhere. He has been in pain and suffered a lot since april. I keep wishing if I got him to the vet earlier. We don't have avian vets, so I read up the vet profiles and found one who treats birds, travels around the world to learn more about birds and has been there since past 20 years. So, I ended up taking him there, when he had stopped moving around, eating, drinking and kept sleeping all day. I had been giving cayenne pepper and ACV as natural anti inflammatory and painkiller to him already. Still he was prescribed allopathic anti inflammatory for a month. 2 weeks back he was given a homeo painkiller called Arnica 200.
Ceylon cinnamon, turmeric, cayenne pepper and a couple more herbs are helpful with pain and inflammation. I boil everything together in water for quite a while for it to be dense, sieve it and mix a few drops from it into his water. We have been giving eggs too. For me, it seems like a nerve daamge right now, so I ended up looking for natural nerve damage repair food and we have added it all.
From my notes,
* Painkillers: cayenne pepper, turmeric, clove, ginger, mint * Topical painkiller: turmeric, lavender, clove, cinnamon, mint * Anti inflammatory: ACV, ceylon cinnamon * Supplement: Multivitamin, Calcium D3
* Nerve damage repair food (might not be useful, just listing out): Spinach, basil, mint, egg, broccoli, coconut oil Vit B supplement, Multivitamins, Calcium supplement and for topical massage: Coconut oil boiled with dried chamomile, lavender flower and mint.
I have been spending past 3+ months all worried and to a point when vet didn't prescribe med and asked me to wait it out. It was difficult to see him suffer like that and heal on his own. I know it's difficult not to worry, but try to keep calm and just do whatever you can. These buds can sense anxiety and nervousness.
Bdw, Breezie is fine now, but uses one leg and we don't want him to fall down ever again, since it would be very bad for him. So he gets separate out of cage time and stays in a cage separate from Cookie.
Edit: Sorry, I read your last post just now. Maybe if these natural anti inflammatory helps..in case you can't take him to the vet. Feel free to DM me, just in case.

That sounds like a plan lady bird. It's good someone more local has some sort of knowledge, that's really positive news as an option. We are all here for you x

It's good to be able to talk things through ladybird, with similar people. I think we all really care about each other as well as our big flock of buds. It's so nice to have friends out there who know what you are going through. Even if we don't have all of the answers for each other it's good to know we are all there

Yes Marianne I agree. I am keeping a close eye on Charlie. I have put him food and water near his perches that he uses and he is eating and drinking. He hasn’t tried to go down to the bottom of his cage but is moving slowly from one perch to another at the top. He does put his foot down but very carefully, but he isn’t gripping normally. It looks like it can’t wrap around the perch…….He has been talking a lot and comes to the front of the cage when I talk to him….. I think he might come out if I opened the door, but I am keeping him in today. He is quieter than normal but I don’t think he is in pain……..Will have to see if he improves over the weekend, and if he doesn’t improve then I will have to get him to our local vet who say they hav someone who is good with birds…….I am still worried about him and I think I worry more because I am not well myself…..So keep fingers crossed for him 🤞🏻🤞🏻 And thank you all for advice…

Just an update on Charlie… This morning he seemed a bit better , he came straight to the front of his cage when he was uncovered for his kiss. I then saw him jump from perch to perch landing on both feet, although he was holding it off the perch when resting. He was talking and eating and I thought he was definitely improved……. I wiped the poop off his perches and did his food etc…….Now as I look, he is definitely limping again and picking at his toes as though he has hurt it again….OH dear, just when I thought he was on the up. It’s definitely odd how his front and back toe are not bending properly. But yet he can land on it ok?

Perhaps it’s rest he needs and jumping around irritated whatever is causing it. It’s good that it seemed better initially. Hopefully it is something that can resolve itself over the course of a few days.

Agree. It must have been better for him to jump about. Also when landing, he would not be bending them. But it does seem as though rest will help. Do you have a flat perch? Thinking that might help
