Hello everyone,
I have a 2-3 months old budgie and he has been with me 13 days. When I bring him home, he was very silent and inactive as it was expected since it was a new environment. Then he had diarrhoea and poo at his vent all the time. I gave him guardian angel and he was better for a day then got worse. He started to bob his tail and looked sick so I took him to the vet on Tuesday but she could not examine him properly because he is not hand tamed. She gave a painkiller called loxicom and advised me to give him fruit and vegetables. Yesterday, when I got home I saw that he could not use his legs properly. When he was walking, he fell and used his wings to balance himself. I tried to call vet clinics but could not find anywhere. This morning he looked terrible and standing at the bottom of the cage. I put some millet, seed mix and water at the bottom of the cage and put some low volume nature sound.
I asked some of my friends who are breeding budgies and they told me that he must have been sick before I adopted him and there is nothing to do. However, I want to ask you as well because he is so young and I want him to live. When he tries to move, I feel horrible because he does not want to die.
Can you advise anything to make him feel better?
Thank you so much.

This is a horrible situation, but I am not sure what to advise.
Is he eating/drinking at all? what do his droppings look like?

Thank you for replying. He is eating and drinking but has diarrhoea so the droppings are watery. (atrb_partsz)

I live in Nuneaton, England. I have called 8 clinics but only 1 of them has an avian specialist and he/she is off until 28 August. I took him a to regular vet.
I am home right now and his legs are completely useless. His apetite is good and his eyes are bright but he only lies at the bottom. He is getting worse and worse 😢

So sorry to hear all of that. You must be so anxious..
Could you keep him warm? Don't give him a bath during these times.. Keep him at a place which isn't noisy and where he can rest well.. it's said on this forum that millets are easy to digest.. Whenever my buds have disturbed stomach, I usually stop veggies and put them on a seed only diet for a while. However, the cause for your birdie isn't known yet, so I'm not sure what to advise apart from keeping him comfortable until you can get to a vet. Are any of the non avian vets are good enough to take a look at your bud? 28 august is way too late to wait for the avian vet..

I put millet and seed mix at the bottom so he can eat and drink. Unfortunately, there was only one vet that accept to see my budgie and she could not held him. She gave loxicom and advised to give him veggies.
I have been observing him and he seem so energetic. He is eating, drinking play with the cuttlebone but cant use his legs at all. What can cause this? Should I massage his feet?
By the way I am suspecting of AGY because when I hold him I felt his chest is pointy. Also his apetite has been very good since I got him but he is thin for a bird I think.

Give him the seed that he has been having. Changing the diet on a bird that is obviously not well is very poor advice, and any vet worthy of the title will be able to handle a bird as small as a budgie. I agree with others’ opinion that this bird was probably not well before it came to your home. I can only advise that you find a certified avian vet to get some professional advice on how to help this poor creature.

I will contact the clinic that has an avian specialist but I am not sure if my budgie can wait til that. It is so desperate.
He is trying to perch and move to the top of the cage but his legs do not work. He can only use his beak to hold. It is devistating to watch him trying to do normal things. 😭
Last night I massaged his legs and add vitamin mix to his food and drink. Also I have read that vitamin d drops can help so today I will buy and use it. I will feed him with formula because I have read that sometimes they seem eating but they do not actually. I will do everyting I can to keep him alive and well.

Agree with others stop the fruit and veg it won't help with the diarrhea, stick to millet and seed.
Ring a local vet they maybe able to give you some Baytril or sulfatrim. Some antibiotics at least to try to combat whatever the tummy issue is. I wonder if your budgie is weak due to the sickness - if it's a bug or something which has depleted the energy levels almost completely.
Have you spoken to whom you got your budgie from? The breeder? To see what they can suggest or of any other of their birds are ill too?

The vet clinics directly refuse me and redirect me to another clinic as soon as they hear that I have budgie as pet so I have to wait until the avian specialist in back on. I will look for those medicines, maybe I can buy it online or from pharmacy etc.
I contacted them at first when he had diarrhoea and they answered but after that they stopped writing. Everbody says that he will die eventually because handicapped birds cannot live long but when I check him he does not seem dying other than legs and breathing fast. His eyes are bright and actually he is trying to do normal things. Thank you for your advice.

I'm sorry the vets aren't being very helpful. Handicapped birds can live a long and happy life, don't let people tell you otherwise. I know this for a fact as I've had handicapped birds.
The medication I mentioned is prescription only I'm afraid. I'm not sure what to suggest other than keep your budgies warm, put a towel over the back and sides of the cage so they feel safe (not the front, so they can see out of it), keep on with the water, seeds, millet and keep things as calm and quiet as possible so your budgie can rest whilst you wait for the aviary vet.

Would you be able to upload a photo or video of your budgie?
Calcium might help him possibly, worth a try anyway. I use calcivet by the birdcare company, you can get it on their website or ebay.

Poor little thing. I am not sure what to recommend.
How is he now? have his droppings improved?
