I was just about to ask the same question.

One of the longer feathers has fallen out. It's got little tiny holes in it. I hope she didn't pull it out herself You can see that she is still recovering - see the stress bars across the feather - so while it’s a bit sad that the feather dropped, maybe not so surprising. If I hold a ruler up to the photo on my tablet, Penny’s feather is about 12.5cms in length. Going from the tip of the feather as zero, I see stress bars at around 3.5 cm, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5 and 8.5 cm with some others in between that aren’t so obvious. They show up as darker lines across the feather on the blue/black side of the quill and a dark shadow o the white side.

I see the areas you mean Hezz. Are they stress bars then? I thought she had just been pulling at the feather, perhaps you're right.

*scratches head* I found this in the bottom of Penny's cage in the last half an hour. It's a feather shaft, but with no feathers on it. I see no pieces of feather to suggest that it's been stripped of feathers, so it must have grown like this. Penny from both sides, just now. Eve's duplo man (called Car) which is holding said feather shaft.

Obv I have no idea, but presume that as she’s now improving, these could have been already on their way and before just might not have grown. Maybe it has to work through her system somehow.

My thought is that if she is producing feathers with stress bars, she till isn’t completely back to tip top condition, so hopefully the feather shaft is an anomaly left over from her torrid former life and her feather health will improve as she does.

How she holds her left wing is odd. Do you think it was an old injury or she developed that angle from sitting on eggs so long? I wonder if it will change over time and does it contribute to her ability to not fly?

Hope you are right Hezz, I really want her feathers to get back to how they should be. My thought is that if she is producing feathers with stress bars, she till isn’t completely back to tip top condition, so hopefully the feather shaft is an anomaly left over from her torrid former life and her feather health will improve as she does.

She does hold it oddly, I don't know the answer as to why. I am not sure if it stops her from flying, she can flap her wings as I have seen her do it in the cage. She turns one way and then another frantically and then flaps like she's annoyed. But I don't think she has the instinct to flap if she falls. So, maybe she just never learned and never built up the muscle necessary. Hope I am wrong about that. How she holds her left wing is odd. Do you think it was an old injury or she developed that angle from sitting on eggs so long? I wonder if it will change over time and does it contribute to her ability to not fly?

Let’s hope she can and is encouraged by seeing the others fly.

Penny's feathers are still there. Perhaps she might keep the tail. Fingers and wings still crossed

Aahhh! Tail feathers! Way to go, Penny!
Fingers crossed that she keeps the rest, even if they're not the best quality this time around.

Marianne Marlow, it seems you shared Penny’s origin story somewhere, but I haven’t found it yet. Would you mind sharing again here or linking me to it? I’m super curious!
