Good Afternoon.
I have had 2 budgies for about a year and a half now, untamed. 3 Months ago my precious and first budgie, Moonlight has passed away. Way before Moonlights death i have decided to get her a friend, a second budgie to accompany her as i have recently moved out to my own apartment. Moonlight was completely tame whilst the new male budgie, Ferris was not. I did not plan on getting them anymore friends when miraculously a lost budgie flew on my budgies cage as they were hanging outside so i decided to keep him, naming him Bently.
Bently and Ferris till this day do not bond towards me. They have slightly bonded towards each other but fight occasionally. I have gotten far enough as them coming near my hand for millet but otherwise they fear me tremendously. I have searched online and tried everything the internet mentioned from clicker training, hand feeding, forcing my finger underneath their tummy to lift up, but nothing has worked.
A friend of mine who owns a couple cockatiels suggested separating them and trying to tame one on one. So, i have bought another cage and separated the two. I feel very bad doing this but i cannot think of another way so i have come here to ask for help as i do not want my budgies to be lonely/ depressed and end up sick. When separated, my budgie Ferris didn't seem to mind whilst Bently wandered around his cage, chirping and trying to get to Ferris. My plan is to keep them in separate cages but for the cages to be next to each other for majority of the day. I only plan to bring them in separate rooms while i try to tame them. I am scared that they will constantly spend their time trying to get to one another and when i attempt to train one they will express no interest in me and only proceed to search for the other. Therefore, what are your thoughts on this?
Another thing i wanted to address is that i often let them both fly around the house. They would sit on top of the cage and enjoy. What should i do now? Should i still allow them to fly together or have them fly in separate rooms.
Thank you all very much for your time and patience
