Snakes are my biggest phobia. Oh my goodness, I wouldn’t be in a B&B, I’d be on a plane! I have parasomnia and many of my dreams involved them, including throwing myself out of bed and running to the kitchen, where I finally woke up and realised it wasn’t real, and screaming the house down. My poor husband! I have medication for it and I used to sleep perfectly; head on the pillow and that’d be it until my cup of tea wake up call. Now I get a lot of nightmares, which is apparently very common during the menopause, but thankfully not as acute or physical as before. Marianne Marlow, you’d handle it yourself if you knew it wasn’t poisonous?!! I can’t even cope with slow worms!! |

The one when I ran into the kitchen was when I was running through dark caves and there was a huge one behind me. I think it’s a bit like the basilisk in the second Harry Potter film for those that are familiar with it, but I hadn’t been watching it around that time. Other particularly vivid dreams include one where my sewing box had fallen from my husband’s wardrobe (it’s never been kept there) and I got up and was trying to pick up all the pins and needles from the floor so my youngest wouldn’t stand on them and another was him walking on a glass platform and he couldn’t see it was just a ledge and I was trying to get to him before he fell over the side. My husband had an app that would record when there was a noise and so we used to listen back the next day to the stuff I was saying. I clocked my husband one in the face one night and you could hear it so clearly on the app. I was mortified, he was understanding and my GP and neurologist found it hilarious.   Yes, if a snake was near any of my animals I agree that I would definitely save them Marianne Marlow but I think I’d grab a rolling pin, baseball bat or a rake or anything as I wouldn’t be able to touch it. Way back in 2005 we attended a wedding in Luton and so went to Winslade Zoo with the three kids we had at the time (4 wasn’t even a twinkle). I was not happy when I saw a blooming big snake and at the same time the plastic door strips moved and one touched my ankle. Yes, I ran!! |

Hezz, you sound so cool just casually talking about a snake around.. !!
I'm not sure how I would react now, but my college was amidst jungle and farms, in the outskirts.. We often had snakes visit our hostel rooms and garden area. My friend had a snake at her bathroom door and she just picked it up with a broom and threw it away!! We used to be scared a lot in the initial days. We often had the snake charmers to catch the snakes at the hostel. We eventually got fed up being scared of it, when we had to spend 4 years over there. Just being cautious while walking in the corridor or the garden would be on our mind.. 🙈
There were some superstitious staff too. They believed feeding milk to snakes and folding hands to pray, they would go back. We rather believed in calling someone to catch it and release it in the wild.

Sorry, Marianne. The snake seems to have taken over your moth.  Try to answer questions and comments as they came up … what sort, Marianne? It will be a python of one variety or another - either carpet python or amethyst python, so a constrictor, and not something you would be wanting to wrangle on your own. Not poisonous but they eat chooks and small wallabies whole. A budgie would only be a tooth-full, if they had teeth. Even snake catchers are wary about letting these things wrap themselves around a body. One told us once that it would take two strong men to get it off if the snake did decide to do so - that was talking of one around 2 metres long. Will it move out on its own? Hopefully.  . Once it has run out of food ad needs its next fix, we hope. We have been having issues with Giant White Tail Rats as well, so it is most likely following that food source. skysmum, how did it get into our ceiling space? I’d like to know where, but they can flatten themselves and squeeze through the smallest spaces. The house is old and badly built, so probably got in rather easily. Bit of a worry if it doesn’t move out as there have been instances here where the snake has been too heavy for the ceiling and busted through! Often when they are mating so twice the weight in one area.

The good thing is that these guys aren’t otherwise dangerous, and generally if left alone they take themselves off back into the bush. We do get someone in to remove them if they find their way into the house and too big to be safely moved by a novice, or of a dangerous variety.
