It is not sticking out a lot but she could not get through the hole in the nest box as it was sticking out a bit. She tried to fly but fell down onto the floor. Do budgies have problems flying when they are laying eggs?

Hi my budgies are both about 12 months old and she went in her nest box and laid 3 eggs the last one Sunday. On Monday evening she came out of the box and did not go in again and today Wednesday she has laid an egg in the bottom of the cage. Watching her she has been trying to get in the box today but could not get through the hole as one of her wings is sticking out at what I'm going to say her shoulder. She has not done anything to it that I know about is it anything to do with egg laying? I've taken the eggs out wiped the inside of the box and made the hole larger but not at the bottom of the hole to stop chicks falling out. Has anybody any idea about why her wing is sticking out a bit. She is sleeping a lot and has not tried flying so I can not say if she can fly or not. I am disabled from a head injury and researching is hard for me so any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks for any advice.

Do budgies have problems flying when they are laying eggs? As far as I am aware budgies should not have any trouble flying when carrying eggs. If perhaps the hole was just a little to small for her to squeeze into in the first place perhaps she injured it that way. Also egg laying takes up a lot of the hen’s own calcium stores from their bones, which can make them brittle if they do not get enough prior to and during egg laying. So make sure she has plenty of calcium in her diet - cuttlebone and calcium mineral blocks to choose, oyster shell grit with added minerals, or even human grade powdered calcium citrate (not sure of the dose) or guardian angel’s liquid calcivet/Calciboost can all help. The last is good to have in hand in case of emergency egg binding.
