Tom has gone to be with Mabel His breathing had got worse and this morning when I came downstairs at 8am he was on the bottom of the cage on the towel; I thought he'd gone. I then realised he hadn't and was still breathing but his legs had gone, so I kept the curtains closed and the light dimmed and I picked him up in the towel and held him. We sat for quite a while and then I put him in the crook of my arm for a bit before placing him on my chest so he could hear my heartbeat; I don't know if it is the same for budgies as it is for dogs in that it is a comfort to them to hear your heartbeat. We sat for over an hour. Just 10 minutes ago I took him outside into the sunshine so he could feel it on his feathers and I held him up in my cupped hands next to the aviary; John, Rupert and Sam all looked and he looked at them. As I came back inside he passed a couple of minutes later. A little bit about the incredible Tom.....I rehomed him from the RSPCA on 1/11/14 and he came with Geri. I was told Geri was dependent on Tom but once they were around the others that didn't appear so. Tom was quite a character - very noisy, liked to head bob and beak bash anything including bits of wood, and was a really good eater, he liked oats to munch on but would eat salads, beetroot - anything that was going really. He won Mabel's heart from Ron and they were together for many years, including the past 3 or so years that Mabel had to live inside. At first I tried Tom outside without Mabel but he got that distressed I brought him in with her and bought the biggest cage I could afford. They lived happily inside with Tom content in feeding Mabel and preening her. He really was a special little boy. Mabel passed only recently, and although Tom joined the flock again outside and seemed happy bashing bits of wood and chewing the door, I wonder if he just wanted to be with Mabel again. Tom - you were a superstar in helping me care for Mabel for such a long period of time whilst she was poorly, I am thankful for you coming into my life. Fly high over at Rainbow bridge and say hello to Mabel and the others for me. We will all love you and will miss you very much xxxx

That is a lovely tribute to your special boy, Tom. I'm so sorry you lost him, but I can understand how comforting it must be thinking he will now be with his beloved Mabel. I can imagine them reminiscing over how lucky they were to live with you.
