My male budgie has recently been opening and closing his beak rapidly for a period of time. He is otherwise acting normal, playing, singing, flying etc. He has been feeding my other budgie lately too son not sure if this is connected. He doesn’t look like he is panting or having trouble breathing and doesn’t seem distressed. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?

Is it possible to upload a photo or video of him? Is he overheated? My male budgie has recently been opening and closing his beak rapidly for a period of time. He is otherwise acting normal, playing, singing, flying etc. He has been feeding my other budgie lately too son not sure if this is connected. It is possible that the regurgitation for the other bird, especially if this has just started, is irritating his throat a little. While regurgitation is a natural occurrence it can still cause some throat irritation if they are constantly doing so, and I’d be surprised if there isn’t some when they first start doing so as well.

Is his tail bobbing when he does this? (can't see in the video)
I'm not sure if he's breathing rapidly or chewing seed in his beak.

No his tail isn’t bobbing at all. He goes down to his seed, has a few bits and then jumps back onto the perch and does this. He either does it like he does in the video or with his beak on the perch. He does it for ages at a time like it’s taking him forever to chew/swallow the seed. I’m pretty sure it’s got to do with his eating rather than breathing as he is still flying and singing as usual without panting or anything after.

Yes, he's chewing seed then.
I had a boy that did this all the time like he was chewing gum!

Thanks. It just got me worried because it’s a new thing. I’ve had him for two years and the past two weeks or so he’s been spending a lot of time doing this. Is it usual for them to chew so long?

My bud MoonGoat does this. If I hadn’t read about other peoples’ budgies doing the same on this forum beforehand I would have thought he was having some sort of trouble also! Sometimes he only does it for a short while and sometimes he sits and chews for ages. I really think this behavior needs further study in budgies!

Interesting! Would a change in food do anything or is it just a mannerism?

Maybe he just likes to grind his seeds extra fine My bird that did this eventually went on to develop AGY, but it probably had noting to do with it. He lived to just over 12 years old anyway! Interesting! Would a change in food do anything or is it just a mannerism?

I think it is just a mannerism, just as I have one who likes to twizzle his grass leaves. He can sit and twizzle the same blade for ages.
