Thanks Morgan, very interesting. I've been considering putting quinoa in their diet - sprouting it. I think I read somewhere that raw quinoa should not be fed to budgies so I wondered if sprouted would be good or must it be cooked?

Quinoa doesn’t have to be cooked to be fed to the birds, but most prefer it cooked, it has a nicer taste. It only takes a short amount of time cooking to make them produce their little tails, around 10 minutes or so, so much quicker to cook than to sprout. Cooked seems to be considered more healthy than raw, but that is not taking sprouted into consideration, so not sure about that.

Morgan I love that this is a quick off the top of your head summary. My head struggles to recall what day of the week it is at the moment 😂 Oh me too! Nutrition is fascinating to me. The day of the week though… well I haven’t made plans for much of anything based on what day it’s going to be in a long time!

You can sprout it but I would do so separately from your sprouting mix - it actually sprouts much faster than other grains. Cooked quinoa is more readily digestible than raw, which I think is true for most grains, not sure about cooked compared to sprouted though. There isn’t a lot of solid nutrition data yet on sprouted foods, though it’s being studied a lot more.

Thank you! Next time I cook up their mash, I'll add a bit of quinoa and see how they like it.

Another question: Marianne Marlow posted that she had given her budgies baby corn to eat. Is that the tiny corn on the cob? Raw or cooked? I thought I might see if my guys would like it.

The only tiny corn on the cob that I see in the store is canned and salt is listed on the ingredients. If I give it a good rinse, do you think it would be OK?

I'm not sure I'd risk that. I'm surprised they don't have fresh stuff. Ours comes in a pack like this:

My local grocery store did have it in stock and now I have it. I'll see if my guys will eat it! Funny the things that the store has that I never paid attention to. Then one day I want it and surprise - its been there all along but I never looked.
