Have they come to the dish to check it out? You might sprinkle some millet or their favorite seed on the sprouts to entice them to try them.

Marianne Marlow and jellybean I have another suggestion that you might try. If you eat brown rice, couscous or quinoa next time you cook some, put a little aside before you flavor it and add a little bit to the sprouts when you serve them to the budgies. Most budgies love grains which are good for them and may encourage them to try the sprouts. How are you doing with the sprouts?

The problem is TPM, they won't know rice has been added to the sprouts when they won't go near the SPROUTS 😂
Another unsuccessful day here I'm afraid. Got another portion left for tomorrow, I won't hold my breath 🤐

As soon as the cover is off in the morning they both dive to the seed pot TPM 🤣🤣 But I will keep trying. Take the regular seed out overnight and feed them the sprouts first thing in the morning with a tiny bit of dry seed sprinkled clearly on top. If they don’t eat within an hour or two tops I would be astonished. They will at least go to eat the regular seed on top of the sprouts if they are hungry enough and there are no other options - which will get them to at least check the sprouts out too. Don’t put too many seeds on top that they just fill up on those and then yell at you until you give them more. Be strong! It’s worth this short term struggle for their long term health.

How is everyone doing with the sprouts!? Now that the weather is cooling off here I’m doing larger portions at a time, and leaving them out to sprout for longer periods. I still start feeding them on day 3, and right through until they pop out their first leaves. Then if there’s any left they go in the fridge. <3

Sorry jellybean, I have not had a chance to sprout them yet, I'll try and get that started today. How are your gang doing with the sprouts Marianne, any luck?

Morgan I sprout for 2-3 days in warm weather and 3-4 days during cooler months and then put the sprouts in the frig. I usually sprout about 4 days worth of feeding at a time. I think I'll leave the next batch to sprout longer and see if my guys enjoy those.

I think I'll leave the next batch to sprout longer and see if my guys enjoy those. Mine tend to eat all the seed-looking bits and the roots first if I let the sprouts grow leaves, and eat the leafy bits last, or sometimes they don’t eat the leaves at all (as far as I can tell). But I’m always hoping they eat at least some of the new greens :3 I figure at all stages of sprouting from three days onwards there might be nutritional profile changes so, why not? And I figure maybe in the wild they’d have more dry seeds in the dry season and then various stages of growth as the wet season comes on. I’m not controlled enough to completely mimic that all the time, but as our wet and colder season comes on it does allow the sprouts to stay out longer without going bad, so that’s easy enough for me to manage.

So, it's the 3rd day and this is what they look like. Are they progressing okay?

Yes Marianne Marlow those look just like mine. They look a bit wet, try to shake them a little more. You can feed them a bit of those now and leave them to continue sprouting another couple of days. Here is a batch of mine after 3 days. Keep in mind that temp and humidity in the room effects the growth. Come on gang - treat coming!

tweetiepiesmom, I hadn't quite finished rinsing them out, I just wanted to get a photo of them quickly. Yours have grown much more in 3 days! I'll see what mine are like tomorrow. I can bet you that they will just ignore them though!
