I like covering the tops of cages with something to prevent droppings from soiling the perches inside the cage. I always end up with the bowls outside the cage during the day, so soiling those from the cagetop isn't an issue. So theoretically I could just leave the cage top uncovered but it does save on having to scrub the perches every evening.
Recently I've taken to using newspaper because we can just screw it up and bin it with the paper from the cage floor at the end of the day. Makes things nice and quick. However I was holding it in place with pegs, but since moving the cage that's become more awkward, so I've been wondering how else to keep the paper from flapping about when the budgies fly around. Stuff on top of the cage helps but not completely.
I'd also need an idea that would work with the curved top of the Hagen Vision.

How about tightly woven seagrass or raffia placemats? The tightly woven ones are easier to clean. The downside is your budgies may like chewing them so you'd have to replace them at some point. You may need to whipstitch two or more together to get the size you need.

I got 4 wipeable place mates from Next that are a good size. I use them under the clothes horse for the mess and also the legs of the clothes horse as new carpet. they would be good for the top of the cage I think - not sure of the material, maybe a nylon but not shreddable, I don't think

I have 8 bamboo placemats that we were using on there before using newspaper, put two on top of the bookcase for now because they're easy to take down to clean if the budgies happen to go up there, we just found it was easier for OH to have something to toss rather than wipe.
I might try them without anything over the next few days and see how much mess they actually make on the perches.

Wooden pegs are probably the least concerning to use, but these are too large, could you use small bulldog clips, or small plastic hair clips?

Those might work, Hezz. I can give them a try. Maybe I should also see if the cage is at all magnetic. Probably not but if it is then little magnets would be easy enough to get hold of. Thanks for the ideas everyone!

I use folded newspaper, on top of some old floor tiles. Just taken these snaps for you.

Covering the top of the cage wouldn't help for my guys. They love perching up there but hang their bum over the edge so the poop lands on the floor.

Max will not go on top of the cage.. it is like he has no idea it is connected to his cage Baby Brodie had no idea that it was a surface he could sit on & I had to tech him - maybe that’s the same with Max?!

Oh mine poo everywhere, tweetiepiesmom, but they are also willing to poo up there too. Marianne Marlow Thank you for the photos of the Visions. The bars of both cages are lightly magnetic, I have discovered, so OH picked up some magnets from a shop in the hospital today. They are also pegs, so will double as a way for me to put leafy veg up. Too flat for anything chunky.

Magnets are a great idea; just hope they work, now.

Fingers crossed. We'll test it later. Unless they decide to push them off we should be fine.
