When Mango was going through her egg laying which we couldn’t break I did end up resorting to a hormone injection, not once but twice which was really considered extreme. Once is considered a last resort so for her to need two (months apart) was considered a risk. It is possible that things have improved over the last five-six years, but that was the opinion at the time.

skysmum Yes, apparently she was trying to do something rather inappropriate to the vet's head. With us though she just tends to stand there and occasionally preen some hair. There won't be much time for her to be out of the cage anyway now. She'll have to make do with chats. Hezz I did think about you and Mango when the vet was talking to us. I'm at least in the ?more fortuntate position that if Gwen insists on a clutch no one in the house would stop me from letting her if there was a chance she'd chill out afterwards as a result (as long as I didn't want to keep all the babies). I just couldn't be there to rear the babies if something happened, but I could see if the local breeder I got Yuki from or the others he works with would be willing to take them in that instance. Hopefully this is just the hormonal surge of youth and she'll calm down though. My housemate asked if there was something wrong with Gwen pleasing herself on things, considering what Munchy gets up to with Kevin, and I had to explain that unlike the boys she might start laying eggs as a result. Although it's not exactly desireable in the boys either.

skysmum Yes, apparently she was trying to do something rather inappropriate to the vet's head. Well that is one diagnostic feature I suppose. One of the more unusual ones🤣🤣🤣 I do hope she settles down soon!

Actually the main reason that people avoid hens is that they want their cute little budgie to talk as that is their sole reason for getting one. Little do they know that both sexes talk. Yeah, I know. Most people wouldn't even consider hormones and egg-laying when choosing a bird. It's why I've avoided hens until now though, and the first experience of them isn't great in that respect. But then my granddad already knew that hens could talk if they want to. Not that we bought a budgie looking for a talker. I was just always fascinated by them. I currently have 4 hens, the biggest nuisance is Iris, but that isn't to do with laying eggs. She is a toe bitter, a seed trough puller up and down and a general busy-body and a bully! Yeah, I know. OH weighed Gwen this evening. She has remained at 32g, so that's something positive at least. It didn't look like she'd been at her bowl, but that can sometimes be hard to tell. I'm in tomorrow so I can give her some company and maybe let her out for a bit, as long as I keep my hands to myself. 😆

I'm glad Gwen hasn't lost any more weight.

Ira, you are lucky in that regard. I dearly wish I could have allowed Mango to do what she obviously so badly wanted to do. Now I could as I’ve got the aviary, but couldn’t because I’ve got the Lokster Monster. One day I might indulge myself and get another hen if I can find a sure-fire way of keeping the two apart.
