I hope everyone is in good health❤️
we heard on multiple occasions that we shouldn’t feed our birds vegetables everyday! of course I have to ask my most trusted source (this forum) about this issue, does it have any truth to it?
I would appreciate any kind of input on this issue, and also if there is a difference between vegetable and herbs intake.
I’m very grateful for all your assistance over the years ❤️🌹

My two guys get some kind of vegetable or herb everyday. I hadn't heard that it might not be good for them. I'm waiting to see what others say.

I'll wait for for more expert opinions to be posted but I have heard from multiple sources that spinach needs to be limited to a rare treat, due to (I'm told) "calcium replacement from the iron". I follow this advice but otherwise, I provide a variety of vegetables everyday, plus a small amount of fruit three times per week. However, the kakariki and the gerbil are the only ones in my flock who seem to care about fruit.

My boys get veg every day. They don't get fruit, they never really showed any interest and it tends to be higher in sugar than veg so not as good for them. I keep an eye on their poo and if they look too wet I might limit the leafy veg until it's back to normal. loz I had heard that about spinach but I'm sure I read more recently that it was disproven (sorry, I can't remember where I saw it) so I don't limit it as much as I did. They absolutely love spinach!

I give veg every day too.
You shouldn't need to limit spinach. It's true that spinach contains a high concentration of oxalate which binds to calcium but spinach also contains a large amount of calcium too, so most of the oxalate is already bound to calcium, meaning the calcium can't easily be absorbed from the spinach, so spinach isn't a good dietary source of calcium. It cotains lots of useful vitamins and minerals though.

Thanks criswell, that's exact what I read - it may even have been you who told me

My guys also love spinach. When they see me coming with a spinach leaf, they fly to my hand to get it.

As long as you are feeding other veg besides the spinach, variety is the key to a range of micronutrients. So a bit of everything every day is better than a belly-full of only one or two. The only time I would change this is if there appears to be a poop problem.

Dexter especially likes the spinach leaf stalks and he always nibbles them in preference to the leaves. He was really pleased with the 3cm stalks on his leaves today.

I'm delighted to learn here that spinach is safe for budgies. It was always a favourite of Hibs' and I'm sure the others will love it too. Spinach back on the regular menu!

Mine also have veggies every day and I vary them so they don’t get bored. Today is sweetcorn and carrot so I know they’ll be happy!

Babycorn was kind of meh for my flock. Hibs, Chocobo and Brown Jenkin nibbled on it but without much enthusiasm and then not at all. Ill try grown-up corn soon. Shredded carrot was a complete bust. Even Chocobo gave up on it. Curly kale is enjoyed by all, it's a big hit. Red pepper is being tried today, I'm hoping it's a success!

Red food is very scary in this house, avoided like the plague! It's funny but since Brambles arrival Willow has converted fully to 'budlish' and the only clear phrase he still says is 'do you want spinach!'

So far, Chocobo is cautiously approving of red pepper. The budgies are more concerned with politics than with new foods this morning
