Charlie (3) has been making cracking sounds a lot for the past few days , as though he is cracking seed. He is eating well and still talking a lot but doesn’t usually make the noise unless he has just eaten. His poo looks ok, although it’s collected a bit in his feathers sometimes and I removed it. His feathers are quite long under him as he is a show bird. It’s the cracking sound that I am wondering about really?

Could it be that he has a seed still in his mouth, that he is cracking, chewing?

Could he be just grinding his beak like a happy contented budgie? Sounds like his poo might be a bit dry - try giving him more wet foods like herbs, lettuce, sprouts, etc.

I am actually worried about him now. He is definitely not his normal chatty self. I think the last couple of days he is quieter , he normally talks all day. He is sitting slightly puffed up and sleeping more…… The nearest vet is 30 miles away and me and hubby are elderly and I am disabled. We have taken him one before and took him in his big cage…because he hates being caught and I was worried about catching him and putting him in the travel cage.. .. I might be imagining it but I think his breath has a slight smell….he is making the seed cracking noise….and poo collects a bit under him. I am so worried 😥😥

I'm sorry for your troubles with your feathery friend.
I believe with your budgie being fluffed up and the change in sleeping and singing habits, you'll need to get him to a vet as soon as you can. With small animals it is better to be swifter and safer than sorry.

I have just tried to make an appointment with the nearest Avian vet ( 30 miles away)and she is off with covid and won’t be back until next Wednesday. I could see an ordinary ve at same practice , but we have ordinary vets close to where I live…….So I have covered the corner of the cage where he perches and put a hot water bottle on top of his cage….I really don’t know what else to do….of course I could make an appointment with my local vet tomorrow if he is no better. I have putGuardian Angel in his water too. He is eating OK. I worry about stressing him as I do know show budgies are not as robust. WORRIED MUM 🥲

If it were me, I'd ring the local vet tomorrow to try to work out whether they'd feel confident in diagnosing and treating your friend and to see if they'll fit you in on an emergency appointment. I suspect that antibiotics will be prescribed but then you have the tricky job of administering them. But I would contact the local vet in any event. Hang in there Charlie! I hope one of the forum regulars can offer more or better advice. I'm sure Hezz can help but she won't be online for several hours.

So sorry for you and Charlie. I suggest you make the appointment with the avian vet now for when she gets back in the office. You might ask if one of the vets in her office could do a phone/video consult with her sooner. If Charlie seems to be getting worse, then take him to a more local vet.
Hopefully one of the folks here will have some suggestions to help him while waiting for the vet. Maybe if you post a video that will help with suggestions.

She is not back until next Wednesday and fully booked but I could ask about her speaking to me, thank you good idea. I can describe his symptoms….slight smell on breath.. making a cracking sound ( as if cracking seed) Listless and fluffed up a bit…. Not talking and usually talks a LOT…. He is eating and his poops look normal although some keep getting stuck to his feathers ( but they are long as he is a show budgie). To think….I said no more dogs or cats because I worry to much….let’s get a budgie I won’t get so attached……how wrong was I 🙄

How worrying, I think it’s a good idea about a video consult if that’s possible. Also speak toy your local vet. Sometimes they have someone you could see, that you might not be aware of. What’s the smell?
Hopefully with the GA in his water, that will perk him up. Is he moulting?

No ffiscool he isn’t moulting, just finished about a week ago. I can’t really describe the smell, it’s not nasty just not right. I phoned the breeder before that I got Charlie from, he is also a show judge and so knows lots about budgies naturally. I described all the symptoms and he said it sounds like it could be a gut problem, he did name it but I have forgotten. Anyway he is going to come and look at Charlie tomorrow and bring his medical box. Charlie keeps having a rally round and chatting a bit , then gets tired quickly…not wanted to come out today. He was shouting for his toy budgie called tweety pie before, he always kisses it goodnight…so he obviously wanted to go to bed early. So he is covered up for the night now…… Hopefully G the breeder will be able to help him tomorrow………and thank you all for helping me, I will let you know what he says about him.

I gave my budgies broccoli and they all started grinding there beaks afterwards while they sat on there perches. If that is the crackling sound you mean then its a good thing. I believe it means they are happy.

How nice of the breeder and I’m sure they’ll know what to do
If gut, maybe a probiotic is needed. Do you give Charlie ACV?
