I live in London and I'm not sure if its just a London trend to charge several times more than the market value for something or whether its a UK wide thing but some pet shops are charging a hell of a lot for a budgie.
I paid 25 pounds each for my budgies which is a reasonable price and about right and I have 3 of them.
I have been looking around at other pet shops around London mainly just out of curiosity and one pet shop wanted 75 pound for a single budgie or 150 for a pair. Another pet shop was charging 100 pounds for a pair or 50 for a single budgie and so on. None the high priced budgies are special breeds and kept in small "often over crowded" cages with no enrichment and a basic perch with food and dirty water.
How can these pet shops be charging so much? it just seems a bit greedy and the crazy thing is people are paying these prices.
Has anybody else noticed pet shops becoming very expensive?

When I got Eric and Monty (my first budgies) in 2009 they were (I think) £22 for one or two for £40.
In 2010 I got Jerry who cost £25.
Since then I have not bought any budgies from pet shops.
I agree that the cages are more often than not overcrowded and the water looks dirty.
Monty was 4 when he died, Jerry was 2 and we only had Eric 2 months (they told us he was 6 months when we bought him, but pet shops will tell you anything to make a sale)

Gosh! I've never seen such expensive budgies in pet shops! £25 seems fairly standard.

I paid £100 for Squeak and Patch at Pets At Home. To be fair, the cage they were in was a good size and I was informed that there were never more than two budgies at a time in there. I use a local shop now, the budgies are well looked after as far as I can tell. Perhaps the cages are a tiny bit crowded at times but not alarmingly so and they are a decent size. Herman cost me £30.

I have noticed that the cost of all pets here has gone up alot. I think this had started during the pandemic lock down when everyone was at home and wanted to get a pet. Its a supply and demand thing.

As far as I know its relatively easy to breed budgies so that there is always a supply of them while maintaining the budgies health with a breeding program setup.
These pet shops get there budgies very cheap but sell them for as much as they can get and they don't seem to care about the welfare the poor birds its always about money.
There are plenty of places online where you can buy budgies cheap or even sometimes free so I don't think there is a huge demand for budgies I think some people just go money crazy.
In one of the pet shops I went to there was this poor budgie in a cage all by herself who was a bit older and her cere and beak didn't look to good and she was a bit thin looking and I expect she had been in that pet shop for quite sometime because nobody wanted her. I felt so sorry for it I was thinking about getting her and when I asked the price the guy said 75 pounds. I just walked out at that point. I could have bought her but then I'm just feeding the greed.

That's mad, i think that's London prices tbh, we are around 40 miles from london and they are still £25 in my local pet shop, i think you would expect to pay £50 to £100 for a hand tame one, if not more from a breeder. So annoying that they are cashing in on covid and peoples urge for a pet that is a five min wonder, like the thousands of pounds they are charging for puppies that are being dumped into rescue centres now, awful

Makes me angry and sad too skysmum, all these unwanted animals especially dogs that were bought during lockdown by people who never gave a second thought to what would happen to the animal once they returned to work 😡

Agree jellybean. I have seen a lot more adverts for budgies to be rehomed that people are saying that they do not have time for too. Why don't they think?

Agree jellybean. I have seen a lot more adverts for budgies to be rehomed that people are saying that they do not have time for too. Why don't they think? Because people are selfish and can’t think past the nose on their face. Makes me cross, too, but at least these ones are not being taken outside and having the cage door open on them and then shooed out into the wide blue yonder.

It makes me mad too. Animals should not be treated as objects. Yesterday somebody offered me there dog and at first I thought it was some kinda joke. They said the dog was too much for them because it was destroying the house and they paid over 2 grand for it during lock down. I almost took the dog home with me but I have other rescue animals I'm looking after so having a dog in the house was a big no no. Hopefully the dog will find a good home.
I am rescuing an unwanted bunny today who will have there forever home with me.

I can't believe someone just offered you their dog! Hopefully they will take it to a proper rescue and someone will love it.
Well done on taking in the bunny.

Someone offering a complete stranger their dog would have me worried about the animals welfare.
These people make me so bl***y angry 😡

My neighbour offered me their dog when I asked after him but did not follow up when I said, "Sure, I'll take him!" Hooch is a good dog.

My boys cost me £25 each from a register breeder, he also does before and after care which is great. I though that was a very good price and about what I expected to pay also I was determined not to get them from a pet shop.
