A little over 26C here since 11am. Birbs have been sensible for the most part. I think both tiels have had mostly quiet day.

So much cooler today, I am so glad.
Last week I was complaining that I was cold!

It's hard to cope with such a change in temperature. I was complaining about being cold last week too. It's not gone past 25C in my lounge so I feel lucky. Unexpectedly I got offered a marking contract 2 weeks ago, marking GCSE maths for OCR. I was on a reserve list and someone dropped out so I got an invite. I've had training to do on my own and in an online meeting, and then practice papers to do. Over the last 2 days I've been marking 10 standardisation papers that had already been marked by the principle examiner, to make sure I was giving the right marks. I really hated that part and spent hours checking and rechecking and deliberating over whether a statement was close enough to what the mark scheme said or not. I got them finished at 1am. I wasn't confident that I had got them right but felt better than I did earlier in the evening when I decided that I didn't want to do marking after all! I took the morning off as I just didn't want to think about marking as it was so horrible yesterday, and I had a lovely time watching TV with my flock. When I logged in this afternoon I had been approved and I hadn't made many mistakes at all, so I can now get on with marking 373 exam papers by 1am on 16th July. It doesn't seem so horrible to do, and I might even enjoy it a tiny bit

Marianne Marlow. Thank you It's quite a lot of work but not too bad. It works out as 21 papers a day. I will be dreaming the maths questions before long as that usually happens when I do a lot of the same thing. I can download 20 papers at a time and then I can either mark by candidate and mark the whole of their paper or mark by question and do all the question 1s etc. I like marking by question and then I switch to mark by candidate to go through each paper to make sure I'm happy with my marking. I'm sure I'll get a bit quicker as I feel more confident but today for some questions I've had to spend quite a few minutes thinking about it and consulting or the guidance to make sure I'm giving them the correct mark. I'll still be popping in to read the forum as that's a nice break from the marking but I might not be posting much for the next couple of weeks.

I would certainly much rather be posting here lozMarking is going well. I didn't get as much done as I should have yesterday though. I feel quite sad for some of the candidates who have worked really hard to answer the questions but have unfortunately not got very many of them right.

Odd question: Is it generally true that, in the UK, you will ask someone where "the toilet" is?
We say "bathroom" or "restroom" here in the USA (or "men's room" and "ladies' room"). Saying "toilet" is not proper. Which is silly because you probably don't need to bathe or rest in the grocery store's bathroom. Also, saying "restroom" is considered slightly more proper/polite than "bathroom".

Lots of people in the UK ask "Where is the loo?".
I like to ask for "the head" or "the john" because that tends to lead to a conversation where I can talk about my fictional life as a sailor.

Most people I know would ask where the loo or toilet is or the ladies.
Signs in the UK generally say toilets too.

I have ordered a new keyboard ... but I need to know why, when I type, some characters get missed but when Quincy types, they *all* come through
