Update:
Went to the vet yesterday. This time I was able to speak with the head vet there. They examined her with stethoscope, which she sounded good, and took an Xray. We saw her liver is getting bigger and pressing air sacs more. I also asked for a fecal test (waiting for results). I told them my concerns about fungal infection because we were using antibiotics for 1 month and it didn’t do anything, and her symptoms are getting worse so maybe it could be a fungal infection right? They claimed using Enrofloxacin -an antibiotic- does not make any fungal infection to speed up.
Then I asked for a blood test just to be sure, and they said they can’t take blood sample from a budgie. I then asked, well how we do the test to see if it’s a fungal infection. And turns out they can’t. There is no test they can do to see if it’s a fungal infection or not. And even if somehow they diagnose her with something like aspergillosis, they don’t have the medicine for it. The thing is after we used the third round of antibiotics when I called them saying it’s not working, they told me “we could try antifungal and see how she reacts to it” and they are saying this right now. I’ve read online medicines for aspergillosis are voriconazole, itraconazole and amphotericin b (they mentioned this) but those medicines are extremely rare and expensive here, (itraconazole is not even in the stock and there are like only 2 medicines available to purchase and you have to join the queue) it’s also not even buyable without prescription. I spent over 1500 at this point with no results so far and my family is getting on me.
I even read that some avian vets give antifungals when they administer antibiotics for a bird because not want to the fungus to spike up.
As for that gagging movement I was concerned about they said she’s doing it because she’s in her “heat” season. I find this completely inaccurate because she never did this before in her 5 years of life and it’s really obvious that she only does it after when she takes a deepish breath.
I told you earlier that they thought she might have developed asthma, for now they want to test it and I was given Cortisone and Ventolin and I was instructed to use them with a nebuliser for 10 mins a day.
Before you say ask for another opinion, they are the most popular and only avian vet in my region. Every vet in about 10 cities diameter recommends them for birds. There were 5 appointments in 15 minutes when I was there.
At the moment only antifungal I can access is Nystatin, which vet didn’t say anything about it.
I have only one question at this point. Let’s say she had aspergillosis from the beginning, which is like 2.5 months, and we know budgies show symptoms when disease gets serious, would she be still alive with it this whole time. Even after using antibiotics for a month?
