Oh my God sweetpea, that is so much cash! I remember telling my husband before I got budgies that they would just cost the price of a box of Trill a week. Supplements, seed, vegetables and cremations alone have set us back a pretty penny. Sssssh, don't tell him indoors..

Unfortunately We had the costs first hand last year with Charlie…..we reckon we must have spent around £500 counting all his meds and our petrol etc….. If you have a pet you have to be prepared to look after them properly even if it means going without something yourself…….Are they worth it?? YES every penny….. I wasn’t counting food toys etc…..

That's an excellent blog post. I've got a spreadsheet with all the figures for the different pets I've had. I was shocked when I added up how much it has cost. I shall add up the budgie columns and totals for specific bugies too.

When I had Munchy, he ended up not going to the vet until he was already 9 years old, and in total probably came to around £500. Meanwhile Yuki... my sweet and precious and innocent looking marshmallow... well, I don't really want to discuss what he's costing me in vet fees. Between vet fees, food, toys and cages, I've probably spent thousands on this lot over the past decade, particularly since I moved out from home.

Yes, you are correct sweetpea. Budgies in the pet store don't cost much and pet store employees tell people that they only eat seeds so the thought is that the upkeep isn't that costly - until you look at what it costs (both money and time) to take proper care of them.

Just to add, the calculations I used began from when Bezukhov began seeing the vet. The first 4 years of his life were vet-free... the following 4 years of his life... well, I nearly cleared out my spare room for the vet to stay in... I'll also add, that two x-rays were included in Bezukhov's figure. My view on such procedures changed later, so in that sense, his total is probably artificially inflated, in comparison to Perry, who has had no invasive procedures (but still lots of vet visits!)

And therein lies the difference - proper care. I don’t spend as much on my little demons as I get a lot of my stuff out of the bush - perches, toys, food etc - but still vet bills are not cheap.

I've been working on my spreadsheet and I don't have the numbers for individual budgies yet but in the 10 years since we got our first 4 gerbils in 2010 to 2019 I've spent just under £11,000 on food, bedding, accommodation, vets, medication etc for 2 rabbits, 4 hamsters, 3 budgies, 4 steppe lemmings and 12 gerbils (not all resident at the same time). I still have receipts to go through for 2020 onwards and I will add up amounts for individual critters. I think our bunny, Jess, will come out on top but she did live with us for over 10 years and Randolph Carter must be the top scoring budgie.
