It can be especially hard to know what they will play with when they are "of latter years" But then again my little feral man, Sparky is only 2 and something (less than 6 months) and I doubt he has ever played with a toy in his life! He was an aviary bird, and his whole reason for being is other budgies! He does like a swing, full stop!

Well the buds whispered in my ear recently that they want some more toys to play with as they were bored with the ones they had in their cage. Actually, that is a little HUGE fib really so....I thought the budgies needed a couple of new toys. That's a bit of a fib too. Sigh, lets start again. I decided to make the buds some new toys! And here we have something that is actually based on one of stace's Boo's toys (pictured on page 1 of this thread) which I have named "The Mine". If you wish to make one, this is what you will need: Thread (either twine or leather) Ping Pong Ball Beads and a clasp Sewing Needle, Lighter & Knitting needle or skewer (for peircing the ping pong ball) Heat the end of the sewing needle to pierce the ping pong ball Gently rotate the knitting needle into the hole (do not push it too hard as it will dent the ball) Once the knitting needle is all the way through, dent the other end of the ball inside so that you have your marker for your next hole to be pierced by the hot sewing needle Continue making holes until you are able to thread twine or leather through from one side to the other On the end of your thread, place a coloured bead and tie a not firmly to secure it. Repeat that on the other end and then cut off the remaining twine Keep going till you have threaded through all holes. In the last one, leave a long end to tie a clasp at the top of the length of twine to enable it to hang up. NB You may need to jiggle around the twine when threading through (and need a pair of tweezers or pliers) to help you pull the twine through as you increase the inner threads within the ball. Thank you Stace for your inspiration

Another quick creation was based on my original post for the Bead Spider. I decided to make one for the boys (my Mont had one originally) but this one needed to be a bit more durable for my boys Here is what you will need: Pieces of leather and or twine (different lengths) with knots tied at ends Coloured beads Large ring and clasp Thread on the beads of your choice and you may wish to tie some knots in between the beads to give movement between the beads for the buds to move them around Place the ring on the clasp, then tie the other ends of the threads to the ring and secure tightly.

Here's Boo's latest chunky toy. It's a big chunky bark hunk, with chunks of cuttlebone threaded on seagrass rope. On the top is a cute little palm hat. You need a drill to make the holes in the wood. To make the thread holes in the cuttlebone you need to use something very sharp, gently starting on the soft side till you reach the hard back side, then turn it around and gently break through the hard bit. I attached mini stainless steel washers and nuts to jangle at the bottom. Picked those up at the hardware store.

samwiseg I saw your toy and was inspired to make my own. So I am now waiting for 12 pinpong balls to turn up. I didn't know you could get them in different colours. I'm getting 6 white and 6 orange.

Bailey plays for ages with a washer and wingnut..flipping them... and they make a nice thud, which he likes. Also I have silver little coasters which end up being picked at and flipped on to the floor... little things eh...........
