61 isn't that many. I am glad to see Brian Smart on the list, he gave me Snowy and Roswell.

Good to see an international member as well. But that's right 61/2000 in not a good ratio. But still better than nothing

I would love a mentor its the second time around for me possibly the 3rd with budgerigars if you count when I was in my teens , sadly the people that were there years ago and local have either died or given up the hobby , there are it seems sharks in the water looking to prey on the unwitting beginner with big prices for birds that do not produce the goods thats the quickest way to loose a new beginner . we all need someones wing to sit under but sadly there isnt that many about anymore within a reasonable distance and thats where the internet has come into its own for me .. what area do you live in nigel ?? ......send me a pm if you want help and i will give you my phone number

will keep that in mind Ian when I last had budgies there was at least 3 champions and a few really good novice / intermediates within a few miles of me ... there are still some decent ones about but far thinner on the ground..

Can I Suggest that as this forum is a Place that people would come to for help can we not have a Mentors list on here so that people can get direct help and not be taken advantage of when they come into the hobby.Allan Ps I speak from experience and would gladly put my name forward.

hi all i have a question lol,so if people are willing to be mentors on this site ,is it just ask a certain person a question on here,or are theses mentors going to put there names and address and phone numbers on this site and if someone lives near them they could just pop round if they have a question ect? as most of you would know in the cage and aviery there are times when people get there bird rooms broken into and there stock stollen, one thing being a mentor to a newbie at a local club you can get some idea of the persons they are but to get some complete stranger ring you up and ask to see your birds ect are people going to put them selfs at risk of this happening? perhaps thats why only 61 of the 2000 bs members have come forward to do this,or if its just going to be mentors for this site and anyone ask them a question is there any need as there are many members on here that are willing to help others and not just a selected few, just a thought

hi ian it was just a thought of how it would work as breakins seem to be on the up with bird keepers, now another question lol i think mentors are great to have as a newbie but if members on here start to message breeders like your self surly there would be no need of the threads, what im trying to say is that people starting out tend to look at certain things that them selfs are going through on threads on here if people start to send messages through mail then there problems arnt being shared between us all, i thought that what this site was all about so everyone learns one thing or another im not trying to be a stick in the mud or anything lol but i do understand that newbies do need to learn one thing or another but surley ask any question about anything on here and someone will give you the answer and that way we all learn

People can ask the questions on here but sometimes they want to see someone in person to show them how to do something. Like Crop Feed, de-spotting, Vent Trimming or any of the other things..

i agree that having a mentor for a newbie is half the battle, but my question from the start is how is it going to work having mentors on a site were you dont actually get to see that person in person,or are you going to put a list of breeders on here that are willing to go around and visit these newbies in there area catchments? or is it going to be a matter of just mailing that person and ask what ever question you want to know?

I guess you just arrange to meet them if they are near. Perhaps rather than putting phone numbers on an email and location are better then you can get to know them and trust eachother before anyone gets invited anywhere?
