I need your help. I have adopted two beautiful budgies but they have came with parasites. Here in Spain, a veterinarian told me that both budgies have to take a medicine called Flagyl but I have been searching in a lot of pharmacies and in every one tell me that this medicine hasn't been manufactured now. Do you know if there are some natural medicine that I can give them?.
Thanks in advance.

The vet should be able to supply the stuff for the treatment. What kind of parasite? Is is scaly face/legs that your on about?

Where do you see parasites on the body? Do you see any white areas on beak or feet?
Ivermectin 0.1% is used for the treatment of mites in cage birds.

It doesn't see any parasite with the naked eye, the vet just did a stool analysis and he gave me medication that I can't find anywhere. I don't understand too much because they donĀ“t seem to have diarrhea. The only that I can see is that they don't have either a 100% healthy their feathers, especially one of them has the feathers of the wings a bit ugly but I think with good hygiene and good food I can afford it, but of course, I am not very clear if really they have parasites or not. I don't see any white areas on beak or feet, I think that they have healthy beak and feet.

Can you post up a photo, MJ? If you are new to budgies, you may not be sure what to look for, and many members here have experience with external parasites. If it is internal parasites the vet was talking about, you can buy bird wormers in pet stores, but the Ivermectin will do both internal and external. Flagyl is an antibiotic used against bacteria ....... I am not sure why your vet recommended it. And why prescribe something but not supply it? ?? I would be very surprised if anywhere supplied Flagyl over the counter.

As you said that the vet did a stool analysis, then it must be internal parasites or worms. Ivermectin 0.1% will take care of that.

But Flagyl isn't the normal DOC (drug of choice) for parasites, BB. Flagyl is a bacteriocide ....... meaning a killer of bacteria. I don't understand why it would be suggested as a cure for parasites - a living organism that feeds off another. Obviously as it was diagnosed froma stool specimen, the vet is talking internal parasites, and as I did mention Ivermectin will look after both internal and external parasites. I am confused and don't have a lot of faith in this vet to prescribe a bacteriocidal drug for internal parasites. Also Flagyl is a prescription medicine, not sold over the counter. Sorry! Me rambling. Up to me, MJ, I would get the 0.1% Ivermectin and treat both birds with that. And possibly find another vet for next time.

That's why I said that Ivermectin 0.1% will take care of the problem.

Thanks for all your answers, of course as you say the next time I will go to another vet because reading your messages my vet doesn't give me any trust. For instance I am going to upload a photo of them Perhaps with this photo you can know what problem has my budgie Thanks in advance. M.J.

I am not going to be much help here, but to me your budgie looks lovely and healthy, bright eyed, with just that funny patch of feathers on her wing. I don't know what could be causing something like that, except maybe some old damage to the feathers which is causing them to grow differently. Shrug, I don't really know, but hopefully someone will be able to help.

A lot of thanks Hezz. You're ready because this budgie is lovely and as you say he seems don't have any damage but I am a few confused because the vet asid me that this budgies was in very bad conditions and he said to me that tha analisys of the hens showed she has parasites.
But every day I play with her and she looks happy. I don't join her with the other budgies because I am afraid that if she has any problem, the other budgies can get the same illness.
But if in a month more, I don't see any sign more, then I will put together.
Regards.

I would suggest you worm them anyway, before putting them in with the others. The Ivermectin as we mentioned will do both internal and external parasites, and this way you can be sure that they are both clear of any nasties before joining the flock. Most members treat their birds every six months with this and any new birds they acquire, before allowing the new birds to mix with the old. Good luck with them, MJ. They certainly are lucky to have found you for a friend.

Ja ja, I think that I am lucky to have them at home ;D. Let me show a video that I saved last weekend. In the video there are only one of them because the younger didn't want to play with me this day and they were a little scared with the camera, it was unknown for them but by the moment you can see the oldest playing with me. www.facebook.com/#!/video/video.php?v=3277012497298 I wish you like it M.J.
