I would say that he is missing the quails and is lonely and plucking himself also. have you tried putting more toys in to distract him?

He's in the aviary so plenty to distract him and I've added a couple of new toys. Brought him indoors yesterday and after getting back from work today i have noticed a few feathers on the floor. What else is there to distract him?

What else is there to distract him? This is just an idea. But are there any other "lonely" budgies you could put him with for a while in a cage to bond, then release them together into the aviary?

Hi, maybe ive missed something but why did you take the quails out. It would seem that she could be stressed about the change, she seemed fond of them, fantastic that she rides around on their backs She hasn't got any lumps under her skin in the area that she is loosing feathers has she.

No no lumps. I had no choice to remove them as a particular hen (budgie) severely attacked one of the quails to the result it died so I didn't want to risk it happening to the other 2 I had.

He is more than likely plucking, but as hes in a healthy aviary its unlikely to be caused by the more common reasons that make parrots pluck (emotional stress, diet, boredom, vitamin deficiency, neglect) so that would point to a less obvious condition:/ Some internal problem? A complaint that causes itchy skin. What ever they are I don't know! My friends budgie has plucked his undercarriage extensively for 3 years now and is as fit as a flea, but is as bald as my macaw. She feeds veg, vitamins and calcium but he continues to pluck despite having lots of budgie company in a massive cage. I think its just one of those things, unless you spend hundreds of pounds on tests you may never know why, and even if you do spend hundreds of pounds like people do with plucked parrots you still never really get to the bottom of it! (as I well know!) One thing you could do for him is get some aloe vera gel from Holland and Barratt, dilute it a little and spray it onto his feathers. Although if hes outside you don't want to do it unless its really warm and sunny. The aloe helps ease any dry itchy skin. Not sure if it would help but it might be worth trying:)

Yep, cut the leaves at base point and place them point up in a half pint of water. You need at least 3 BIG leaves, or lessen the water ratio if you have small leaves. You can give them a squeeze to milk them properly. You only want the goo out of them and none of the dark green stuff that holds the goo together. I milk my aloe and drink it in a pint of water every few days:)

Just an update I had him in a cage for a couple weeks he lost more feathers eventually I thought it won't change so might as well let him enjoy the freedom in the aviary however today seems a lot of his feather have come back and haven't noticed extra plucking

That sounds like good news. No more plucking. Now he can be with his friends.

Maybe he was sulking over the quails going and has now gotten over them.
