Took Georgie and Smudge to the vets as the coughing not getting any better and noticed that Georgie's wings were a little droppy and their poops were not quite normal. The vet was lovely but as soon as she saw Georige thought that something was not right (was looking quite sorry for herself by this time). Gave them both a drop of those mite drops and put them on a broad spectrum anitbiotic. I've also given my other two budgies the mite drops this evening just incase. Trouble is I am going on holiday this Saturday so my in-laws (in their 80's) will have to give them their medicine and take them back to the vets for the drops. They seems to take the anitbiotics on a bit of millet so that should be quite easy. I've put them in a quiet warm corner tonight. I hope they get better. If no improvement in 72 hrs she wants to xray next - Im not keen as they are only 15 weeks old - very high risk. I felt so bad that I didn't take them before - poor babies!!

Oh I am so sorry to hear about poor Georgie and Smudge I can't really offer much advice other than to keep them warm, make sure they have easy access to their food and water and keep the cage covered on three sides so keep them warm and calm. I will be thinking of you and the two little ones, keep us updated. Also don't go blaming yourself, budgies are masters at keeping their illnesses hidden xx

Sorry to hear, Ginger. I am sure you have gotten them seen to in time. Yes, it is a bit of a bummer you won't be around to tend to them when they need it, but I am sure the in-laws will do an excellent job of administering medicines and vet visits. Ask them to keep an eye on whether they are eating - things are not good when a budgie stops eating. But I am sure they will be fine.

Hi - thank you both. I've not heard any coughing and their poos seem perfect now!! They both go between quiet phases and loud phases but they seem to be ungoing their heavy moult as well and loosing their baby feathers.
I am very hopefull they will make a full recovery - will keep you posted.

Anti Bs are better given in the water or better still directly into the crop, a warning Anti Bs will not last 24 hours in a clear water drinker and will need to be replaced daily

Hi all - have returned from my hols and here is an update! Smudge and Georgie seem very happy and perky and have been eating very well and taken their full course of anti biotics but almost as soon as I walked into the house I heard Smudge coughing :-(
Also, with regards to my older two budgies, Jasper was coughing a bit this morning (not heard him do it before). I have treated them both too with Ivermectin.
They still have one more dose of Ivermectin to go - should they have stopped coughing by now after two treatments or do I need to wait 7 days after the full course to see?
Barry - just read your post about putting the Anti biotics in the water - they took it very well on the end of a bit of millet (they were given Baytril in syrup form). Do you think I should treat my older two with the anti biotics too or just with the Ivermecin?
Thanks for your help.
