Hi Everyone,
My budgie experience is very limited, I have a 12 year old budgie who has began laying eggs she has had 3 over the last 3 days.
I have been watching for signs of egg binding, increased her calcium intake, re-arranged her full cage including perches, we've also been covering her cage earlier and removing her cover later to give the impression of longer nights.
The first egg we removed, but she laid another one and then another should I remove these eggs also and repeat the above process? She is nesting on them.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Sunnyjo and welcome to forum Laying in this age could be fatal. You are doing good with calcium. Where is she nesting?

At the bottom of her cage, on the floor. What else can I do for her to stop her nesting?
Should I remove the 2 eggs she's nesting on?

Yes you should remove the eggs. Change the cage location and cage setup every few hours. Remove anything which resembles or can be used as nest box. Remove any cloth or newspaper from cage floor. It will be better if you can close the cage during day and let her perch outside or above the cage.

Thank You, Can I ask is there anywhere ie petshop where I can vet Calcivet I know I can order it online but I would much rather have it tomorrow, at the moment I only providing cuttlefish etc.. I was reading a thread on eggbinding and it sounds very useful to have especially now.

Once I tried to buy Calcivet or Calciboost in London but wasn't able to find it. So I guess same will be the case in other places. Cuttlebones are good but won't help at all in case of egg binding. A few drops of undiluted liquid calcium into beak can save the life of an egg bound hen. I hope someone from your area would be able to help you

Just checked on eBay. The normal delivery is from 4 to 5 days but self collection is free and on the same day in various cities. Check if it is available for your place.

Undiluted liquid calcium I could get from Holland and Barrett? I will also order the Calcivet for if she has problems next week.
Is it common for birds to nest when they are Sunny's age - erm excuse the name many moons ago I was told she was a he.

Hi If she was mine, I would leave her to sit the eggs
& let the old girl get it out of her system naturally.
she's not laying because she wants to upset you.
She has no control over her hormones. Why upset her
by doing all those moves to her cage etc . She'll stop
when her body tells her, not because you've moved
her swing around, even though they may coincide
Yours .B.J.

I'm not upset about her egg laying - I'm worried she may continue to lay eggs and get herself into an emergency situation.

Sorry I don't know about Holland & Barrett's version. Laying and nesting is natural to hens but it is dangerous in her age.

This is the first time she's ever laid eggs, I've had her for 12 years.
