How do you tell a male from a female with finches Carl? Males have flanks, the spots down the sides, so I'm sure that is a male. And what a pretty guy he is too! Also he will sing and display, whereas the females will just 'meep'. Another way to tell is colours and markings although this is in a general sense and isn't always reliable if there are a lot of mutations down the line. Males will usually have coloured cheeks, although in black cheeks the female will also have cheeks. And males have red beaks and females orange although I think this can sometimes vary with the type of zebra finch. You can also get yellow beaks, which are very sweet

I think the one I posted is female, I found the picture on the efinch website - they have some lovely zebra finch photos. I particularly love the 'teardrop' markings on finches, such lovely little birds. I'm excited to see how you get on Carl

The mutation of the bird Is it Chestnut flanked white CFW. BB Is black breasted, OB is Orange breasted. What combination of mutations is the little finch? the white one with orange He is beautiful. I want one like him! I am working on a completely orange and dark grey zebra currently. I just started my project, my female is split to black breasted and i am going to get a black breasted male.
