hi everyone . as most of you know i have 6 budgies 3 cocks 3 hens ... im thinking about putting a couple of breeding boxes to the side of my bird cage .. i cant afford another cage or breeding cages but i can afford to buy some nesting boxes i have the type of cage which u can put the boxes were the water bowls usually go so they are on the outside im wondering will my budgies breed if i put a couple on there or maybe 1 in every gap only reason im thinking of this is because i think it would be cruel not to let my budgies have an attempt of breeding. i have homes for every budgie if they do have babies they would go to averies in the bird farm we have here... what is your advice from you lady and gents? should i put 1 or 2 or 3 breeding boxes or would it not work that way ?

Hi My advice for what it's worth is. Don't do it.
I suggest you wait until you can afford to breed
your birds. In fact it could amount to cruelty to
breed birds without the knowledge as to
their requirements. In such a confiner space
blood will be spilled. Yours B.J.

Personally I'm not a big fan of colony breeding, which is where birds are allowed to pair up with whichever hen and all the birds can access every nestbox. It can lead to bloodshed as hens can be nasty when it comes to breeding. If you could get another cage and set up one pair that would be a better scenario but I have always read that it is better to have two pairs incase one deserts their young. I have no experience of breeding yet but I have been doing a fair amount of research as I plan to breed this year So just my opinion.

Read THIS about Colony Breeding. It would be better to get two breeding cages. I know a few people who own 6 to 10 budgies and keep them in one cage. Once a year they buy breeding cages to breed their budgies. Once finished both chicks and breeding setup is sold. Don't worry about the experience. You will get a lot of good advice here. You will have to do some reading before you start buying stuff.

my neighbour has a cage so if they did breed and lay eggs i would move the babies to there anyways. i have that planned lol BB ive read all barries tips and that from here . thanks for posting about colony breeding . i will ensure that if they do lay eggs they will be seperated even if i have to buy a smaller cage for them. im still not too sure about this yet im going to get adice from a local breeder face to face so i know what he is talking about and hopefully i will get some more opinions from here also !

It is not cruel if your budgies are not allowed to breed, i breed to show otherwise i wouldn't breed.

Agree with Corie. It isn't cruel to not give them that opportunity. A bit like the old thinking that a bitch should have a litter of pups and then be spayed. Not so, now.

If you just have toe one cage with 3 pr's in it and only enough room to hang one or two nest boxes then you will end up with hens fighting over the boxes and doing each other alot of harm .
You say your apartment is quite large but you dont have space for breeding cages , you could get some of the Moncaster all wire breeding cages , i have these for my breeding cages and they can be stacked onto of each other providing you secure them to the wall and they look quite nice so no need for wooden cages in your home .

Something similar to this can save a lot of space in apartments.

Excluding the stand will save at least half the money. Placing sheets of plastic, MDF, wood or any other similar material between the cages and securing them with zip-tie from four corners would serve the same purpose as stand.
