They looked terribly cold - maybe they sit together to keep warm. We get the rainbow bee-eater, which are gorgeous I think, but not a patch on those beautiful red ones.

A little bit of trivia: Enviromental dept is using our local guys, the rainbow bee eaters, to track down hives of asian honey bees, which have managed to import themselves into the country and causing grief to the local bee populations and bee keepers. Apparently they, the bee eaters, nest in the mud of creeks and rivers but only close to their food supply.
