Hi kcc4, ive been reading this post with interest, well done to you for helping these little guys. I cant really add any more advice to what you have had already but i think anything you do can only add to their quality of life, keep doing what you are doing and i really hope the guy can get them a bigger cage. One thing that i feel i would do is to put a larger dish of water in the bottom of the cage for them to splash around in, i know you are spraying them but they love to get right in there and it may relive any itching and cool them down if it is hot.
Ive just read Pen Farthings book about his rescue Afghanistan dogs and Jay Kopelman's From Baghdad with Love. You guys can make a difference with these animals, well done again.

I would just like to commend you on your concern for these birds. You're doing a wonderful thing and surely improving their lives! I'm following this thread with great interest and finding it so heart warming. Well done you! I haven't really got anything to add as you seem to be doing all the right things! Hope all goes well with them.

From my untrained eye, it does look like scaley face. People who have been through it themselves, agree? Disagree?

The food and water are situated where the openings are, Marianne. I think that is why they are where they are. More a design fault with the cage than a owner issue, I feel. Especially is the owner is afraid of them escaping. Obviously the cage is very small for the number of birds, but I am surprised with how clean it seems. Maybe that is Kcc's doing, in which case "well done you"!

But they do get pooped in being that low down. I'd block them off and get some higher up seed and water containers though.

It looks like Scaly to me.I only had one bird with it when I got her but it cleared up pretty quickly after treatment. A coop cup or similar higher up would be better for putting food in if it's possible to get hold of. You are doing a great and kind service to these birds. I only wish I had a spare cage I could send you.

well done you for taking an interest and drawing attention to the plight of these little sweeties! I wonder, I know forces personnel can be great at make do and mend....couldn't you get some of your billet or squadron to make an aviary or at least a bigger cage? That cage is way too small poor little things. Not hygienic at all either, I think the chap has taken on more than he can handle and knows what to do with....then comes along a soft forces guy and ...things are already looking up. I do wish you well and hope that the lives of these little budgies greatly improves. Good on you for caring. God speed and good luck. www.ehow.co.uk/way_5178931_do-yourself-bird-cages.html

Thanks everyone for your replies and sorry I haven't updated in so long - I am getting frustrated!!! He still hasn't gotten anything for the birds I tried to order them some things myself and am having trouble finding a place online that will ship everything out here. Out of like 10 things I ordered, including a cage and mite medicine, only a couple of the things were able to be shipped here. Some "budgie bones", and some cute little covered nests I had picked out. I'm not sure what online store would be best and not charge me crazy shipping.. and can I even order from stores with prices in £ with my american debit card?! Maybe a stupid question... I've been considering registering for eBay thinking that might be good, but isn't shipping dependent on the individual seller? I don't mind buying things but I don't wanna get raped on the shipping lol. Maybe a more experienced shopper can help me with this. On a lighter note, I got in a couple things that I had ordered for them earlier. A pack of different seed sticks, and a bird bath that attaches to the outside of the cage that holds their little door open so they can go in there whenever. At first when I hung the sticks in their cage they were afraid of them!!! All 8 of them were squished into the top right corner of the cage, all on the roof of it and everything. Eventually one of the yellow ones started picking at one of them, and next thing you know the whole pack was gone in ONE DAY. Lol. I'm gonna get them more of those. The bird bath has been taking them a while to take notice of. They do like to perch on the outside of it and drink out of it, and try to chew on the plastic sides of it.. I have seen one of the green ones actually walk around in it but I'm not sure how much he liked it. I just want them to have it available with it so hot here. I put really cold water in there so it doesn't become like a hottub in an hour. Do birds pant?! I swear sometimes they sit with their wings held open, looking like they're panting, and it freaks me out making me think they're overheating.. that's when I'd mist them with water.. but you'd think if they were really that hot they'd go in the bath.. oh well.. The soldiers on this particular fob, I'm not sure how well they could make a bird cage. We've got wood, but you'd need some sort of wire or something, right? I haven't seen anyone with anything that seems suitable.. I'm really starting to get very concerned about their scaly face mites and would love to be able to treat the poor babies, it almost depresses me to watch them sometimes, so if any of you out there would be willing to ship me any medicine if I can't manage to find an online store that'd ship to me, I do have paypal!!! I can tell a lot of you on here are bleeding hearts like I am <3 Oh also - this guy has actually been GONE for the past few days, and has some guys watching his store and the birds for him, but they barely speak english and I've noticed the cage has NOT been cleaned... ughhh it was to the point where I did it myself. But I don't even have running water to work with for that. I used a bottle of water and paper towels, and just did the best I could. We do have baby wipes and other kinds of disinfecting wipes but I was afraid to use it on their stuff - do you think that'd be safe? It'd probably be easier and everything would look a lot cleaner in the end, but I don't want to make them sick... Thanks again

Hi Kirsten. Lovely to get an update on "your" budgies situation. I don't have any ivermectin as I only have a couple now - I don't know how the customs and border security would view sending it out of the country either - Australia is a bit funny like that. There is so much not available to us here as we are not allowed to bring a lot in. Pet supplies they seem to have a problem with. From memory, most on-line suppliers have a conversion rate anyway, and there are plenty of US suppliers - surely they would have no problems with your debit card?
