Ok it wasnt and isnt an issue if Elfie was a talker or not (thats not why i got him) but over the past month he has been chirping away with the funnist sounds in between, his voice drops and goes (the only way i can explain it is gravely a bit like yoda) its like he is really trying to get a word out but hasnt quite masterd how to do it yet, he is also making numorous other sounds that i have no way of explaining ha ha How do budgies sound when trying to mimic?

Sounds like he's heard lots of interesting sounds he's trying out! They do gabble a lot (like babies), mix up their phrases and insert random words here and there as well as sometimes copying exactly what they have heard... text message beeps, the phone, doorbell, skype..... How many times have I gone for my phone in vain??!

I haven't had a talking one but I have read that they start talking by picking repetitive sounds around them.

When they start to copy your words there voice can sound very much like yours, its a bit spooky ;D my brother-in-law taught his budgie to say quite a few things and if you closed your eye's you would think it was him talking it was very weird, my sister-in-law was mortified ;D

Well, my previous budgie Pippin always went to a lower voice when he was talking. When we got Pepito he was still young and just chirped and tweeted in normal budgie sounds, but after about 3 months he suddenly went to that lower type voice and we wondered if he was going to speak. The very next day after we heard that sound he said his name! And he since has learned to say a few more things and also mimics the phone, including the "beep" noise it makes when its about to ring and the noise when we put it back in it's stand.
So - it could well be that Elfie is trying out his talking voice... :-)
sounds to me also hes trying to speak ...shouldnt be long now ...my george went deep when he started to talk ...but he learnt from me..... and as i have a deep voice... that was why ... . keep us posted...... ..
When Boo began to speak, he did it very suddenly. He was sat on my shoulder and just started yabbering, like he'd been storing it up until he was right and ready.
Not sure how the speaking thing works with budgies, but their voice does go funny. It seems to gurgle around in their crop area. That's probably what Elf is doing. Like vocal practice.
Now is the time to repeat all those (good) things you want him to say, and be very careful with anyone in the house who may be a swearer. I wrote "curser" firstly, but that just looked like I couldn't spell!
There are always a few sounds that they make, that make you listen, trying to work out what the words are, but they aren't quite words yet. While Blue was a wonderful talker, he would also prattle away in this half english/half budgie way - not quite words, but definitely not budgie sounds either.

I just find it fascinating ,as i said I'm not bothered if he is a talker or not but the sounds he is coming out with are funny ...Thanks for the responses and will keep you posted ;D HA HA You are right there BGM, don't want to let any naughty words slip for him to pick up x

He does sound like he might start to talk soon from what I heard
First words will be "Elfie good boy" I reckon!
