That would depend on YOUR sensitivity, Rob. And what your cleaning routine is like. I have newspaper sheets over the grate and change these every day. Most of the husks end up back in the seed pot and I blow these out outside. I do end up with a lot of grass seed husks everywhere as the birds love them and then they are so light, one flap and the husks are airborne. So these are swept up every day too - sometimes twice, if they have been really messy. If your house/flat is shut up mostly the dust situation would be worse, I feel. Our windows are never shut, different climate, so I couldn't really comment on that.

For those of you that do not know: January 26th 2011 I was admitted to hospital. My oxygen saturation was 78% and I could not walk more than a few meters without having to sit down and gasp for breath. I was on oxygen for 24 hours a day for 5 days in hospital and put on 60mg of steroids. I have lung scarring that could probably be avoided by wearing a mask! My god Marianne! I didn't know either! So sorry to hear that but is a very costly lesson I suppose. I will be getting masks then when we get our new three (thanks for the link), however we have added to the list of things to buy one of those air purifiers. Not just for us but for the birds too. All this stuff is definitely a MUST have

What a brilliant piece Marianne, I am just so sorry you had your health severely affected - but if others can learn about it then thats a positive. I was always aware of pigeons lung so it all makes sense. Btw, loved that you called Abbie the "Ringwraith" ;D

Thanks Sam. I did think your username was from LOTR Yes I am allergic to budgies, pigeons and grass pollen....so far! Hee hee! Yes it is I have always been allergic to pollen (tree & grass) but was only diagnosed with mild asthma recently so worth knowing about pet dander, masks and other preventative measures! But they do say that asthma, hayfever and skin conditions are all linked don't they?

No Charlie I definitely don't want to go back to hospital - the food was dreadful ;D
I'm afraid that the seed catcher wont do me much good. My birds are out all day long and I put their food bowls on top of the cage - husks everywhere!

just out of curiosity would you NEED a mask for 1-3 budgies?? Sent from my E15i using ProBoards Feathers dust can be harmful. So it is a must while cleaning the cage tray etc, unless you are doing it outdoors.

Sorry to be nosy but if you were to stop keeping them would this go or is it something you are left with, i assume it is as its caused scaring. I am told that it would heal if I gave the birds up. But that is not going to happen so it's long terms meds for me. Oh my godness Marianne - I had no idea! Wow - that is scary! In all seriousness I do have a box of paper masks and when I clean them is usually when I sneeze and wheeze. Wow wow - will deffo start wearing them then.
Are you OK now or have you got lasting damage? I am hoping that the lung damage will not be lasting, I have a strict cleaning routine and take lots of meds, I do everything I can (besides give up the birds) to stop things from getting bad again. blimmy i didnt no ... .....thank goodness your ok now .... by the way thanks for putting the link up...iv just ordered 10 masks.... Thanks Mick and well done on ordering the masks! just out of curiosity would you NEED a mask for 1-3 budgies??
Sent from my E15i using ProBoards To be on the safe side, I'd say yes. I also have an air purifier and a vacuum with a hepa filter. Plus we can have the windows open now because we made screens for them

I used to use the thin surgical type masks until the doctor told me those masks are only effective for saliva/moisture. They don't protect against dust and dander and she advised me to get this 3M one. It isn't hard to breath with.
