This is pretty awful. Our 11 year old budgie had a tumor on his preening gland. Took him to the vet a month ago and the vet sais there was nothing that could be done. I posted on this group about this. Well today we went back to the vet and just prior to our appointment, the bird started bleeding from the tumor. He lost a lot of blood. We got him to the vet, and the vet gave him an antibiotic shot to fight infection because the tumor site was getting infected. Brought him home and 2 hours later he died in my hands. We are all very upset and my wife is really upset. Doesn't want another bird. If I could do it over again, I wouldnt have bothered going back to the vet since she told me that nothing else could be done. The added stress of the trip didn't help. That tumor looked really nasty and it bled a lot. I'm thinking that is what caused the death but my wife thinks that the antibiotic shot may have done it.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Your budgie has been with you so long.
Don't blame yourself for anything. You weren't to know that the vet couldn't help your bird. It could have been any of those things you mentioned, and the bleeding may have also been the cause.
Rest in peace, little guy.

Rest in Peace, little one. That your friend lived 11 years showed that he was well loved and cared for. I am so sorry for your loss. Perhaps, in time, you and your wife might want to share that love with another little bird.

I'm very sorry to hear about your bird, we would wish them all a peaceful quiet end when the time comes. It's so distressing when it's awful, but you obviously did everything you could to help him and couldn't have changed the outcome so don't blame yourself. It would have been worse if he's died like that in the night, at least you were with him, and he had 11 happy years to thank you for.

So sorry to hear about your budgie:( He had a good long life with you and made many more years than alot of budgies do. For that you should feel proud that he got to 11! Thats a really good age. They certainly don't handle losing alot of blood and that could well have been the cause. You did what anyone would do by taking him to the vets and trusting the vets judgement on his predicament. Personally I would have thought any injection into the bloodstream after such a tiny animal has lost alot of blood would be a strange thing to do:/ But I'm no vet! Alot of people feel that their budgies last visit to the vet has been the thing that caused them to pass on more quickly. Whether it through the stress of the visit or the treatment given. On the whole if the budgie can't handle the stress of the visit, it was probably at the point of no return anyway:(

I remove a very large tumour from a birds ear yesterday, no blood and the bird is good today. [/quote Your very fortunate. Are you a avian vet? My bird's tumor was in a bad place on the preening gland. He would scratch it with his beak because it irritated him and it bled a lot. The vet said that it was very "vascular" and would be difficult to remove because of the bleeding. The tumor was growing and got very large. Looked awful. When we were ready to go to the vet, we noticed a lot of blood dripping out. The poor guy lost a lot of blood and I'm thinking that was what caused his death.

Sorry to hear your bad news. Thank you all for your kind posts. I'm amazed at how crappy I feel about this. The bird was always there when I walked in the door. My wife used to sing a goodnight song to him every night before she covered him. She is really taking it hard.

She told us that there was no real hope after the first vist. My wife thinks that the ant biotic shot killed him. Maybe true, but I would think that the vet would know better.

Sorry for your loss. It is very hard losing a budgie to a tumour and wondering if you have done everything possible to help. I agree with Nat in that if the stress of a vet visit caused his demise, it was probably a good thing in that his suffering was shortened. He probably wouldn't have lived much longer anyway. 11 years was a good age for your little friend. I had mine for only 6 and a half before a tumour claimed him. Don't be too down on yourself, and these little guys have a way of getting into our hearts. Hopefully in the future you and your wife will feel ready to enjoy another budgie.

I'm very sorry for your loss.
You obviously took great care of him and gave him a good long happy life.
Be proud of that and remember the good times.
The pain fades.
